Happinet and Studio Lights have confirmed that Mononoke no Kuni, an action-adventure steeped in myths and yokai, will release for PC via Steam in fall 2026. The game will support more than a dozen languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, making it accessible to players worldwide. Fans can also get an early look when the title appears at Tokyo Game Show 2025, held from September 25 to 28 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
A Tale of Boy and Pup

The story follows Taiki, a lonely boy who suddenly loses his only family—his puppy Musashi. Overcome with grief, he prays at a shrine and Musashi miraculously returns as an “Inubashira,” a divine canine bound by cursed chains. Soon, a shrine maiden named Kushina tells Taiki that he must gather sacred relics from the Realm of Roots to save his companion. However, the journey ahead is filled with dangers and unexpected truths.
A World of Yokai and Myths

Players will travel through the Mononoke Realm, a land painted with striking colors and mysterious beauty. Along the way, they can meet spirits such as Nekomata the cat, Gama the frog, Komi the fox, and Mujina the tanuki. Some of these Mononoke can become allies, lending aid in battles against corrupted yokai. Each area has its own unique look and atmosphere, keeping exploration fresh and immersive.
Companionship and Combat

Musashi is more than just a companion. As a divine being, he fights alongside Taiki, using powerful abilities to purify hostile yokai. Between battles, players can bond with Musashi through rest and dialogue, strengthening their connection. This focus on companionship gives the adventure both emotional weight and gameplay depth. The mix of exploration, combat, and character interaction ensures that the journey feels both personal and dynamic.
Looking Ahead
With a planned release in fall 2026, Mononoke no Kuni promises a blend of heartfelt storytelling and challenging action. The Tokyo Game Show demo will offer the first real glimpse of its world and mechanics. As players step into Taiki’s shoes, they will not only face dangerous yokai but also confront a deeper question: how far would you go to protect the bond with someone you love?
