Publisher Deep Silver and developer 4A Games have officially announced METRO 2039, the next entry in the long-running first-person survival horror franchise. The game is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store, with a release window set for this winter.
The reveal was accompanied by a 15-minute showcase featuring developers from 4A Games, alongside a six-minute gameplay trailer highlighting the game’s atmosphere, combat systems, and narrative direction. Early footage blends in-engine cinematics with gameplay capture, offering a first look at the franchise’s return to its signature claustrophobic environments and psychological tension.

This time, however, the fractured factions of the Metro have been unified under a new authoritarian regime known as the Novoreich, led by a figure named Hunter, a former Spartan ranger who now serves as its feared “Fuhrer.”
The game places players in the role of “The Stranger,” a reclusive and psychologically burdened protagonist haunted by violent visions. While the narrative remains fictional, the studio describes the game as being rooted in a distinctly Ukrainian creative perspective, reflecting both its origins and its current distributed development structure across Kyiv and Malta. Despite these challenges, the team aims to preserve the franchise’s identity while expanding its emotional and thematic depth.
