Bandai Namco Filmworks revealed that production has officially begun on the first-ever live-action Hollywood adaptation of the renowned Gundam franchise, in an announcement made on February 5. The film, currently titled GUNDAM, will be helmed by Jim Mickle, known for his directorial work on the Netflix series Sweet Tooth.

The live-action Gundam project marks a significant collaboration between Japan’s Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Entertainment, with both companies entering a co-financing agreement. Legendary Entertainment, notable for their work on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, brings substantial Hollywood production experience to the project.
The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, which debuted in 1979, revolutionized the robot anime genre by introducing the concept of “real robot anime.” Moving away from simple good-versus-evil narratives common in robot shows at the time, the series gained acclaim for its realistic portrayal of war, scientific accuracy, and complex human drama centered around military machines called “mobile suits.”

Over its 46-year history, the franchise has expanded to include 25 anime series, 34 movies, 27 OVAs, and various streaming and event-exclusive content. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam has grown into a global phenomenon generating over $900 million annually through various products and services.
In a significant development for the franchise’s international expansion, Bandai Namco will establish Bandai Namco Filmworks America (BNFA) on April 1, 2025. Operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Bandai Namco Holdings USA Inc., BNFA will focus on the production of “GUNDAM” while working to expand the series’ licensing business and brand value in overseas markets. The film is slated for a worldwide theatrical release, with additional details to be announced as development progresses.
