A controversial new mobile gacha game is making waves in the community by featuring what appears to be gender-swapped versions of iconic anime characters. Enigma of Sepia, marketed as a “next-gen RPG,” has drawn attention for its character roster that bears striking resemblances to some of anime’s most recognizable protagonists.

The game’s roster includes characters that share distinctive features with popular anime leads: Nova sports One Piece protagonist Luffy’s signature straw hat, while Satoria dons glasses reminiscent of Jujutsu Kaisen’s Gojo. Perhaps most notably, a character named Denise features chainsaw appendages similar to Chainsaw Man’s Denji.
Reports of the game first appeared on ResetEra, with commenters quick to point out the similarities between Enigma of Sepia’s characters and those that exist in the anime landscapes of Jump and Shueisha, and they have a point.

Marketing materials and trailers for the game showcase characters that appear to draw heavy inspiration from numerous anime franchises, including One Piece, Dragon Ball, Attack on Titan, Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, Fullmetal Alchemist, Sword Art Online, and Evangelion. Even Chainsaw Man’s distinctive aesthetic makes an appearance in the game’s character designs.

Moreover, the developers describe Enigma of Sepia as featuring “epic worldview” and promise a system where players can level up “any heroes into SSR+.” Their website boasts about the game’s 3D graphics, balanced gameplay, and extensive character roster. The game has already generated significant social media response, with users on X (formerly Twitter) pointing out the obvious similarities.
