The indie game marketplace Itch.io has abruptly deindexed adult content from its browse and search pages, following pressure from payment processors concerned about the nature of some NSFW titles hosted on the platform. The decision, announced via a blog post by site creator Leaf Corcoran, has sparked immediate concern and backlash among creators and fans alike.
Payment Partners Trigger Content Crackdown

According to Corcoran, the update stems from Itch.io’s need to maintain critical partnerships with payment processors such as Visa and Mastercard, both of which have strict policies surrounding illegal or explicit content. Similar concerns recently prompted Steam to quietly purge some adult games as well.
“Our ability to process payments is critical for every creator on our platform,” Corcoran explained. “To ensure that we can continue to operate and provide a marketplace for all developers, we must prioritize our relationship with our payment partners and take immediate steps towards compliance.”
Creators Left in the Dark

One of the biggest issues creators are raising is the lack of warning. Developers found their content removed from visibility without notice, leaving them scrambling for answers—and revenue.
While adult and erotic visual novels have been top-selling genres on Itch.io, it’s unclear whether previously purchased titles are still accessible to customers. As of now, Itch.io has not provided direct clarification.
What Happens Next?

Itch.io is conducting a comprehensive audit of its NSFW content to ensure it meets payment processor guidelines. Until then, affected pages will remain deindexed, meaning they won’t appear in search or browsing results.
Corcoran said the company will introduce new compliance measures after the review is completed. Creators will also be asked to confirm their content complies with payment regulations, but guidance on what content will ultimately be allowed is still missing.
This move mirrors the infamous Tumblr NSFW ban of 2018, which similarly followed payment partner pressure and led to a mass exodus of creators and users.
A Blow to Indie Adult Game Development?
Itch.io has long been a haven for adult game developers, especially those working outside mainstream publishing channels. The sudden shift leaves many wondering whether Itch.io can still serve as a viable platform for their work, or if they’ll have to migrate elsewhere.
If this change proves permanent, it could signal a wider crackdown on adult content in the indie gaming space, with other platforms potentially following suit to avoid conflicts with payment providers.
