GOG has announced it will add the original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to its Preservation Program following Ubisoft’s recent decision to cancel the planned remake.
Earlier this week, Ubisoft confirmed the remake had been discontinued as part of company-wide restructuring that affected multiple projects. The remake was first announced in 2020 but faced several delays and was moved between different development studios before being cancelled.

In a social media statement, GOG responded to the news by committing to preserve the 2003 original. The company stated it will work to bring the game into the GOG Preservation Program and ensure it runs properly on current systems.
“While today’s news about the cancelled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake hit hard and might be disappointing for many of us, it also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the game that started it all,” GOG said in the statement.

The company added that it aims to deliver “the best version you have ever played” of the original game, with improvements focused on making it run smoothly on modern hardware. The GOG Preservation Program launched in 2024 to keep older PC games playable on current and future systems. Games in the program receive updates for compatibility and stability, along with restored content like manuals, DLC, and offline installers. Preserved titles receive a “Preserved by GOG” label on the store.
The original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time released in 2003 and became one of Ubisoft’s most important action-adventure games. It introduced parkour-style movement and time-manipulation gameplay that influenced many games that followed. While Ubisoft has said it hasn’t given up on the Prince of Persia franchise completely, no new projects have been announced to replace the cancelled remake.
