Zach Cregger, the director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie, hosted a live in-person Reddit AMA earlier this week about his new film. Cregger has recently directed two critically and commercially successful horror films: Barbarian and Weapons. Resident Evil marks his first take on an already existing IP, and during the AMA, he was vocal about what inspirations he took from the video games to adapt to the big screen.

Cregger stated, “I feel like the biggest inspiration for this was the games, and I mean cinematically.” He cited the third- and first-person perspectives of the games, and said he’s “going to employ the visual vocabulary that these games have employed so well.” The director also added how he tried to emulate the gameplay of the Resident Evil games through choreography.
The director also shared his love for the resource management aspect of the games when a fan brought up the RE series’ archetypal elements. He stated, “You will know how many bullets are in his gun. You will care when he misses a shot. That’s one of the things that makes the games feel so intense, and it translates really well into the film”
Cregger also shared that he wants viewers to be aware of the main character’s health throughout the movie, though he hasn’t revealed how he’ll incorporate the mechanic yet.
The Resident Evil franchise doesn’t quite have a positive reputation when it comes to movie adaptations. Previous films veered too far from the source materials, while others fell a bit flat, even though they featured some of the game’s characters.

Although Cregger is doing the same thing and introducing a new character at the forefront, his intent to deliver a faithful Resident Evil experience seems pure. Instead of pleasing the public by featuring beloved characters, the director aims to make the movie feel and look like the fans know and love.
