The upcoming FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles remaster has had an unusual development process. The developers behind the game had to search fan websites to find parts of the original source code, according to game director Kazutoyo Maehiro. Speaking at a PAX West 2025 panel, Maehiro explained how Square Enix lost the original source code for the classic PlayStation strategy RPG. The problem happened during the game’s original localization process years ago.
“We would basically take the data from the Japanese version and write the English data on top of it. If we wanted to do another language, we would just stack it on top of the previous version and keep on overwriting it,” Maehiro said.
This process meant the original code was no longer in its pure form. When the team started working on the remaster, they had to piece together what they believed was the original version.
“We kind of went on a journey to find the original version. We used whatever resources we had to analyze all those different versions and try to find what we felt was the original,” Maehiro explained.

The search didn’t stop at their own files. The developers also turned to the game’s dedicated fan community for help.
“On top of that, we actually had to go to different websites made by fans and look for data there, because we know you guys do such a good job of keeping all of that up to date,” he said.
The team could have used code from Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, the PSP version released in 2007. However, they decided against this approach. Since they weren’t involved in creating that port and felt its extra content didn’t meet player expectations, they chose to work from the original PlayStation version instead.

The final code used in FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles combines what developers identified as original elements from various sources and fan websites, plus code they created by studying how the original game worked. FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles releases on September 30 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
