Capcom has made its position on generative AI clear: the technology will not be used to create any content that ends up in its games, but it will play a role behind the scenes in how those games are made.
The Japanese game developer recently published a summary of an investor briefing session held back in February, where it addressed questions and concerns from shareholders. Among the topics covered was the company’s stance on AI.
“Our company will not be implementing any AI-generated assets into our video game content. On the other hand, going forward, we plan to actively utilize this technology in order to improve efficiency and productivity of game development. That is why we are currently testing out various methods of usage across our departments, including graphics, sound, and programming,” Capcom wrote in the summary.

What exactly this looks like in practice is still largely unclear, but Capcom’s technical director Kazuki Abe gave some insight in an interview last year. According to Abe, one of the most time-consuming parts of game development is coming up with ideas for the countless miscellaneous objects that fill in-game environments. Even objects that have little to do with the story or gameplay still need to be designed from scratch, and developers can end up needing to generate “thousands to tens of thousands” of unique ideas to fill that need. Capcom had been experimenting with using generative AI to help speed up that part of the process.

It is worth noting that Abe’s interview was from last year, so it is not confirmed whether or not Capcom is still focused on that specific use case, or if its approach has shifted since then.
Capcom is not alone in drawing this line. Nexon Games’ Blue Archive producer Yongha Kim recently shared a similar view, saying that generative AI within his company would be used to cut down on repetitive, non-creative tasks rather than to produce actual in-game content.
