The gaming handheld market has been heating up, and ASUS is making its mark with the ROG Xbox Ally series. We got to hear from Huaipin Li, Business Development Manager at ASUS Malaysia, to discuss how the ROG Xbox Ally series fit into the broader gaming landscape and what makes them stand out in an increasingly competitive field.
A New Chapter in Handheld Gaming
The ROG Xbox Ally series represents ASUS’s latest entry into portable gaming, bringing together Windows 11 flexibility with Xbox’s user-friendly interface. While ASUS couldn’t share specific market share numbers for Malaysia, Mr. Li emphasized their global position in the gaming handheld PC segment. “We are proud to be the global leader in the gaming handheld gaming PC segment, with the most complete ecosystem and a software-hardware combo to deliver an experience that aligns with what we believe gaming should feel like,” he explained.
For those familiar with ASUS’s gaming lineup—from desktops and laptops to the ROG Phone—the Xbox Ally series fills a specific niche. “The ROG Xbox Ally series is an extension to our all-encompassing gaming ecosystem in Malaysia,” Mr. Li noted. The series aims to narrow the gap between console and PC gaming while maintaining portability.
There’s no concern about the handheld devices cannibalizing laptop sales. Mr. Li sees them serving different purposes. Gaming laptops like the ROG Strix and Zephyrus series remain the choice for users who need high-end performance for both gaming and productivity. The Xbox Ally series, however, targets ultraportable, on-the-go gaming.
“Some may own both, using the ROG Xbox Ally for travel and the laptop for work and more immersive gaming, or they can also consolidate everything on their ROG Xbox Ally,” he said. With accessories like the ROG Bulwark Dock, ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock, or the ROG XG Mobile, users can even transform the handheld into a desktop setup with external displays and peripherals.
The Xbox Full Screen Experience Advantage
One of the standout features is the Xbox Full Screen Experience, which caters specifically to console gamers transitioning to PC handhelds. Mr. Li described it as “a game-changer” that brings controller-first interfaces to Windows devices. “From the moment you power on, you’re in a familiar environment—no desktop clutter, no start up hurdles after the initial setup,” he explained.
The experience is optimized for performance, reduces background tasks, and improves battery life. According to Mr. Li, “It’s the closest thing to a console experience on a PC-based device.”
Design and Hardware Decisions
The ergonomic improvements in the Ally series came from community feedback. ASUS worked with Xbox to incorporate elements from the Xbox Wireless Controller, including contoured grips, impulse triggers, and refined button placement. “The result is a device that feels natural in your hands, with balanced weight distribution and tactile feedback that enhances immersion,” Mr. Li shared.
The ROG Xbox Ally X features the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, built on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture with RDNA 3.5 graphics. Beyond raw performance, the integrated NPU enables AI-driven features like Gaming Copilot, frame generation, and intelligent upscaling. “It’s not just about speed; it’s about smarter, more efficient gaming,” Mr. Li said.
Interestingly, the series retains a 7-inch screen while competitors are moving toward larger displays. This choice is intentional. “A 7-inch display strikes the right balance between portability and performance,” Mr. Li explained. “It’s compact enough to be truly handheld, yet large enough to deliver immersive visuals at 1080p and 120Hz.” The screen also features Gorilla Glass Victus and an anti-reflective coating for indoor and outdoor use.
Battery life remains a key concern for handheld devices. The ROG Xbox Ally series provides approximately 4-5 hours of gaming in less demanding titles or around 2-3 hours in AAA games. Mr. Li believes this hits the right balance, especially after the ROG Ally X introduced an 80WHr battery.
While ASUS isn’t offering proprietary power banks, the devices support the USB-PD standard, meaning any quality USB-PD power bank can extend playtime on the go.
Standing Out in a Crowded Market
With the Xbox Full Screen Experience expected to roll out to other devices, ASUS plans to differentiate through hardware and software integration. “The refined ergonomics inspired by Xbox Controllers, optimized cooling design and in-depth performance tuning available in Armoury Crate SE will clearly set our ROG Xbox Ally series apart from the competition,” Mr. Li stated.
Armoury Crate SE is already integrated into the Xbox Full Screen Experience, and the team is looking forward to upcoming AI features that take advantage of the NPU in the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme.
With pricing that sits close to or below many laptops, some users might consider replacing their laptop with the ROG Xbox Ally. ASUS doesn’t discourage this, though Mr. Li notes that the device is optimized for gaming with its controller-first design. “We believe that the ROG Xbox Ally will be more suitable for gamers with its controller-first design and Xbox full-screen experience, while work is better done on the laptop with a bigger screen and physical keyboard,” he said.
The ROG Xbox Ally series represents ASUS’s commitment to giving users choice in how they game, whether that’s on the go, docked at a desk, or somewhere in between.
