The latest trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been released, revealing Naoe and Yasuke as the main protagonists of the game, much to fans’ surprise and confusion.
Surprisingly, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows trailer has sparked confusion among Japanese fans upon realizing that Yasuke, a black man, would be one of the main protagonists.
Historically, Yasuke was a real person of possibly African origin. During his lifetime, he served as a retainer to the daimyo at the time, Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku Era.
However, not much is known about his activities while he was alive, and as such, may have been used by Ubisoft as a character whose history is open to interpretation.
Some Japanese fans have taken to the internet to express their disappointment in the choice, stating that Yasuke was an inappropriate choice due to his lack of historical relevance.
A few Japanese fans have also suggested that Hattori Hanzo would have been a more suitable option as a protagonist, seeing as he was both a samurai and a shinobi at the same time.
For better or for worse, Naoe has been left out of the conversation, as she was an ethnically Japanese ninja from Iga and no one has noticeably had issues with her as a protagonist.
