Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida, known to fans as Yoshi-P, has spoken about the challenges of turning Final Fantasy VI into a full remake, saying the game is simply too big to fit into one project.
Yoshida made the comments on stage at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin, where he was joined by Naoki Hamaguchi, the director behind the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. During the discussion, Hamaguchi was asked which Final Fantasy game had the biggest impact on his life, and he named Final Fantasy VI. He quickly added that answering this question in interviews often leads to headlines claiming he is planning to remake the game, which he said is not true.
Hamaguchi explained that Final Fantasy VI is the reason he wanted to work in the games industry, calling it a title that holds a special place in his heart. He joked that every time he shares this story, an article appears the next day suggesting he is working on a remake, so he makes sure to clarify that this is not the case.

Yoshida then shared his own thoughts on why a remake would be difficult. He said he understands why players want to see Final Fantasy VI remade, but pointed out that the game is massive in scope, and the same is true for other older titles like Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX. He said that if any of these games were remade, they would likely need to be split into four or even five separate releases to properly cover the story.

Hamaguchi added that keeping most of the same development team together throughout the three Final Fantasy VII Remake games was a major achievement. He explained that his team has worked with him for more than ten years across three games, and he does not think it would be easy to find another team willing to commit to a similarly long project. He said that while it might not have been impossible to rotate in new staff after each release, it would have been extremely difficult, and he feels fortunate that his team stayed motivated throughout the process. Because of this, he said he cannot simply agree to remake Final Fantasy 6, since the process is far from simple.
