Tomb Raider: Catalyst May Have Quietly Slipped to 2028

Amazon’s general manager of gaming, Jeffrey Gattis, has suggested that Tomb Raider: Catalyst is now aiming for a 2028 release, though this has not been officially confirmed by Amazon or Crystal Dynamics. Gattis made the comment during an interview with The Game Business, where he was asked about Amazon’s approach to funding and publishing games, and whether the company leans more toward triple-A, double-A, or indie projects.

He explained that Amazon supports all of these categories. He pointed to what he called “game night” games, smaller titles that use a phone as a controller and cost only a few million dollars to make, as an example of the smaller end of the spectrum. On the larger end, he brought up Amazon’s Tomb Raider titles.

“Obviously we’ve announced the two Tomb Raider titles, you know, Atlantis comes February 12 of next year, and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one,” Gattis said.

“So we’re excited about those. There are some other triple-A things that are in various stages of discussion right now.”

The issue is that Amazon’s most recent official statement on Tomb Raider: Catalyst pointed to a 2027 release, not 2028. This means Gattis either misspoke during the interview or was referring to a delay that Amazon has not yet announced publicly.

Catalyst is set to be the 14th main entry in the Tomb Raider series. It’s being developed by Crystal Dynamics, the studio that has handled the mainline series since 2006’s Tomb Raider: Legend. The game takes place in Northern India and is being positioned as a sequel to 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Before Catalyst arrives, Amazon is set to publish Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the original Tomb Raider game. That title is being developed jointly by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. Legacy of Atlantis has already faced its own delay, having originally been announced for a 2026 release window before being pushed to February 12, 2027.
