A new entry in the Gundam franchise has been officially announced. Titled Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, the anime is set to premiere in 2027. Alongside the announcement, the first trailer and a set of scene images were released, giving fans an early look at the upcoming series. Kenji Kamiyama is directing the project and is also handling series composition. Takeo Otsuka has been cast as the voice of the show’s protagonist, Ray Azumi.
The anime is connected to GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, a video game that was first revealed at Summer Game Fest in June 2026. Both titles will be part of a larger media mix initiative called the RG Project.
The RG Project is described as a new kind of approach for the Gundam franchise. Rather than existing as separate, unrelated stories, the anime and the game will share the same universe and the same overall history, though each will present that history from a different perspective, position, and level of closeness to the events involved. Together, the two titles are meant to form a single, connected timeline.
According to those behind the project, this initiative also takes a different approach compared to earlier Gundam titles by returning to a basic question, why Gundam is necessary in the first place. This framework was built by director Kenji Kamiyama along with Toh Enjoe, who is serving as the SF setting supervisor. Their combined worldbuilding is what allows the anime and the game to exist in the same universe while still telling separate stories.
“What is RG Project”
RG Project is a cross-media initiative. The anime “”Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO”” and the game “”GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT”” share the same world settings, while portraying the same world from different ways and visions.https://t.co/iY23rSNqdb#XARXZERO pic.twitter.com/7Z4OBcBddW

In terms of timeline, the anime takes place around 100 years before the events shown in the game. It is meant to tell the story of how this shared world came to be. The game then takes place further in the future, shaped by the events and choices depicted in the anime. Players stepping into the game will take part in that ongoing history and will be able to make their own choices within it.
The two projects are designed to offer different kinds of experiences. The anime allows audiences to watch the story unfold, while the game allows players to actually step into the world and become part of it. Starting from wherever each viewer or player enters, whether through watching or through playing, the RG Project aims to bring both experiences together into the history of one single world.
