Square Enix has shared new details for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, giving fans a closer look at the game’s battle system, monster synthesis, and a few of the new creatures joining the series’ roster.
In The Withered World, players take on the role of a monster wrangler, someone who befriends monsters and leads them into battle rather than fighting directly. Players can bring up to four monsters into battle at once, with four more kept in reserve, for a total of eight monsters available at any time. These monsters can be swapped in and out during the adventure. During battles, players can either issue direct commands to their monsters or set general strategies for them to follow. Each monster also has its own spells, abilities, and unique traits that can affect the outcome of a fight.

The game also introduces a power called the Wrangler’s Spirit, tied to lead characters Bianca and Nera. This ability activates randomly, once per battle at most, and provides helpful boosts to the player’s team. Bianca’s version heals HP and increases attack power, while Nera’s restores MP and raises defense.
Beyond battling, players will spend time recruiting and raising monsters. The game features more than 500 monsters split across eight families, such as slimes and dragons. A major feature of the game is synthesis, the process of combining two monsters to create a new one. To use a monster as a parent in synthesis, it must first reach level 10. When synthesis happens, both parent monsters are lost, but the resulting child monster can inherit their Talents and has the potential to be stronger than either parent.
The game also includes special synthesis patterns that can produce rarer monsters, some of which cannot be obtained any other way. These combinations are marked with a starry icon. One example given is combining a stump chump and a bad egg to create a mitey oak. Alongside the many returning monsters from across the Dragon Quest series, The Withered World will include new monsters as well. Three of them were revealed in this update. Slime Balls are small creatures from the slime family that come in three varieties, sour plum, veggie mix, and shrimp tempura. Bamboo Badboy is a nature family monster that disguises itself as a bamboo shoot to lure in unsuspecting targets before attacking.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is scheduled to release on December 3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store.
