Square Enix and developer Lancarse have announced Final Fantasy Resonance, a brand new entry in the long-running Final Fantasy series. The game holds a notable distinction as the first title in the franchise to use the HD-2D art style, which blends classic pixel art with modern 3D effects. It is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with a launch date set for October 22.
The game follows a group of companions connected by fate as they travel through a world built around classic Final Fantasy elements like airships, crystals, espers, and moogles. Players will uncover the truth behind a mysterious force threatening to destroy everything around them.

Combat in Final Fantasy Resonance uses a strategic turn-based system where players can exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them, breaking their defenses and opening up extra turns. From there, players can follow up with powerful Resonance attacks during what the game describes as cinematic battles. A feature called Visions lets players bring iconic Final Fantasy characters into their party as echoes of legendary heroes, each coming with their own unique skills and abilities for deeper customization.
Outside of the main story, the game includes a variety of side content such as encounters with the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, a Colosseum with monster battles and rewards, the Chamber of Arms featuring enemies sealed inside legendary weapons, and a fight against Ultima Weapon.

On the visual side, the HD-2D approach uses pixelized 3D models alongside dynamic camera angles to give the game both a nostalgic feel and a fresh look at the same time.
