Square Enix has announced a new entry in the Dragon Quest Monsters series called Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC though no release date has been given yet. The announcement was made during a livestream celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Quest franchise. Square Enix also shared a teaser video for the game during the broadcast.

In Japan, the game is known as Dragon Quest Monsters 4: Kareki no Kuni no Bianca・Flora, which roughly translates to “Bianca and Flora in the Withered World.” Flora is the original Japanese name for the character known as Nera in Western releases.

The game stars two lead characters, Bianca and Nera, both of whom come from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, making this the first time the Monsters series has centered its story around characters from that game.

The last mainline entry in the series, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (known in Japan as Dragon Quest Monsters 3), came out on Nintendo Switch in December 2023 and later on PC via Steam, iOS, and Android in September 2024.

The Dragon Quest Monsters series has a long history. The first game launched in Japan in 1998 and reached English-speaking audiences in 2000 under the title Dragon Warrior Monsters. That original game, along with its remakes and ports, starred Terry, a character from Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. Over the years, the game received a Nintendo 3DS remake in Japan in 2012, a smartphone release in 2018, and a Switch and smartphone port in 2019.
