Square Enix has officially re-revealed its next mainline Dragon Quest game, now titled Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. The game was first announced back in May 2021 under the name Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, but the project has since gone through a full development restart with a reorganized team.
Executive producer Yosuke Saito addressed the change directly, explaining that the original version ran into significant problems along the way. After a lot of discussion with Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii about what the next mainline entry in the series should look and feel like, the team made the decision to start over from scratch. Saito described it as a major call, but one he stands behind, saying he believes it was the right move to make sure the final product is something fans of the series will truly love. The new direction also comes with a new logo and subtitle.

As part of the re-reveal, Horii shared a brief look at the game’s premise. He described it as the story of a young hero troubled by strange visions during sleep, with the mystery of what lies beyond those dreams at the center of the narrative. Horii noted the game has taken a different path from what was originally planned, but expressed confidence that players will enjoy where it ended up. Saito teased that there is more to say about the story, but held back on further details, joking that sharing too much would get the team into trouble.

Horii did confirm one more thing before closing out: Dragon Quest XII will continue the series tradition of featuring character designs by the late Akira Toriyama and music by the late Koichi Sugiyama. No release window has been announced at this time.
