Publisher Deep Silver and developer 4A Games have officially announced METRO 2039, the next entry in the long-running first-person survival horror franchise. The game is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store, with a release window set for this winter.
The reveal was accompanied by a 15-minute showcase featuring developers from 4A Games, alongside a six-minute gameplay trailer highlighting the game’s atmosphere, combat systems, and narrative direction. Early footage blends in-engine cinematics with gameplay capture, offering a first look at the franchise’s return to its signature claustrophobic environments and psychological tension.
A Dark Return to the Metro in METRO 2039

In METRO 2039, players are once again thrust into a post-apocalyptic Moscow where survivors of nuclear war have spent decades trapped in underground tunnels. This time, however, the fractured factions of the Metro have been unified under a new authoritarian regime known as the Novoreich, led by a figure named Hunter, a former Spartan ranger who now serves as its feared “Fuhrer.”
The game places players in the role of “The Stranger,” a reclusive and psychologically burdened protagonist haunted by violent visions. Forced back into the Metro he once abandoned, The Stranger must navigate a collapsing society shaped by propaganda, fear, and fractured truth. Unlike previous entries, the protagonist is fully voiced, signaling a stronger focus on cinematic storytelling and character-driven immersion.
Gameplay Focus and Atmospheric Design

True to the series’ identity, METRO 2039 continues to emphasize a story-driven single-player experience built around survival, tension, and resource scarcity. The gameplay showcased highlights close-quarters combat against mutated creatures, environmental navigation through decaying tunnels, and the series’ iconic equipment systems, including signature firearms and survival tools such as the wristwatch interface.
The developers at 4A Games have also reinforced their commitment to immersive realism, with gameplay designed to maintain a constant sense of pressure. Lighting, sound design, and environmental storytelling remain central pillars, with the Metro itself acting as both setting and antagonist.
A Story Shaped by Real-World Context

4A Games, a studio founded in Ukraine and still largely based there, noted that the development of METRO 2039 has been influenced by real-world events, including Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. According to the developers, this context has shaped the game’s themes around control, propaganda, consequence, and the cost of survival.
While the narrative remains fictional, the studio describes the game as being rooted in a distinctly Ukrainian creative perspective, reflecting both its origins and its current distributed development structure across Kyiv and Malta. Despite these challenges, the team aims to preserve the franchise’s identity while expanding its emotional and thematic depth.
A Familiar Franchise, Built for Current-Gen Hardware

With its release planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, METRO 2039 is being positioned as a new-generation evolution of the series. The combination of upgraded visuals, real-time cinematics, and refined gameplay systems suggests a stronger cinematic focus while retaining the survival horror foundation that defined earlier entries such as Metro 2033 and Metro Exodus.
As anticipation builds toward its winter release window, METRO 2039 is shaping up to be one of the most atmospheric and narrative-heavy shooters of the current generation, continuing the franchise’s legacy of oppressive world-building and moral tension in a broken underground world.
