Monotype has announced an updated licensing plan for game developers who use Japanese fonts, following months of criticism from the Japanese game development community. While the changes show some movement from the company, many developers are still left with unanswered questions.
The trouble started in late 2025 when Monotype, after acquiring Japanese font company Fontworks, announced it would effectively end an affordable licensing plan that developers had long relied on to use high-quality Japanese typefaces in their games. This plan had been popular across a wide range of projects, from small indie titles to major franchises like Persona and Fate/Grand Order.

The problem was what Monotype offered in its place. The only alternatives at the time were enterprise-level plans that cost upwards of $20,500 USD per year which is a steep jump compared to the original price of around $380. The backlash from developers was swift and vocal.
Monotype says the LETS plan has been updated to “better reflect the needs of indie developers.” The revised pricing puts the yearly base subscription at 49,500 yen, with a game and app integration add-on now costing 33,000 yen. That integration fee used to be 11,000 yen, meaning it has tripled in price. The base subscription cost stays the same as before.

One notable improvement is that the plan now appears to allow developers to use fonts across multiple titles without a separate limit per game something that was a restriction before. However, Monotype has introduced a new cap on how many copies of a game can be distributed under the plan. The company hasn’t disclosed the actual number, only saying that the limit is enough for a “typical indie game release scale.”
For projects that go beyond that undisclosed cap, or for developers aiming at large-scale international releases, Monotype points toward other options: per-app licenses through its MyFonts platform, or custom enterprise deals.
