In Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, building a powerful team of Monsties goes beyond simply finding rare monsters. Much of a Monstie’s strength comes from the genes it carries, which determine the skills and passive bonuses it can pass down through the Rite of Channeling system. Because of this, gene farming becomes an important part of long-term progression, especially if you are trying to optimise your team. Understanding how egg collection works, and more importantly how to control the conditions around it, will greatly improve your chances of obtaining Monsties with stronger genes.

This guide will contain major spoilers, so please take note of that before scrolling through!

Why Genes Matter in Monster Hunter Stories 3

In Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, genes are one of the most important systems that determine how powerful a Monstie can become. Each Monstie comes with a set of genes that influence the skills it can use in battle, as well as passive bonuses that improve its overall performance. These genes can grant offensive abilities, elemental attacks, defensive traits, or stat boosts that shape how a Monstie functions in combat. Because of this, two Monsties of the same species can perform very differently depending on the genes they carry. Farming eggs is therefore not just about obtaining a specific monster, but also about finding one with stronger and more useful gene combinations that can enhance your team.

Players can also check the gene search feature in the Monsterpedia to see which monsters are known to carry certain genes that are in the regions, making it easier to target the species they want. This addition was a nice change of pace for players who want to focus solely on getting the Genes they want.

      Understanding the Gene Grid

Every Monstie in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection also has a gene grid that determines how its genes are arranged. Each gene occupies a slot within this grid, and their placement can influence additional bonuses. When genes with matching traits are aligned in certain patterns, they can activate extra synergy effects that further strengthen the Monstie. This means that players often look for eggs not just for the skills they contain, but also for how those genes might fit into a larger build. Because genes can also be transferred between Monsties through the Rite of Channeling, players frequently farm multiple eggs from the same monster species to obtain the exact skills or grid patterns they need.

      Understanding How Egg Collection Works

A den with two spots | Image Credit: Digital Braves

Throughout the world of Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, players can enter monster dens to collect eggs from nests. Inside each den, you will find a nest that can be interacted with multiple times. Each interaction allows you to pull an egg, similar to drawing from a pool of possible eggs associated with that habitat.

The eggs available in a nest are not completely random. Instead, they are determined by the egg pool tied to the specific habitat where the den is located. This pool is influenced by the habitat restoration system, particularly which monsters currently reside in that area. In practical terms, the monsters you see roaming around the overworld in a restored habitat are usually the same monsters whose eggs you will find inside the nearby dens.

While you can repeatedly interact with the nest to examine different eggs, there is still a limit on how many you can take with you when leaving the den. At most, players can carry two eggs out of a den. This means that players often continue pulling eggs from the nest until they find one that appears valuable before deciding which two to keep. Though, there is a catch.

      Egg Glow and Gene Quality

While collecting eggs, you may notice that some eggs glow when they are pulled from the nest. The intensity of this glow is directly tied to the potential quality of the genes the Monstie will carry once hatched.

Eggs come in three levels of shine. Normal eggs have no special glow and usually carry more standard gene combinations. Gold glowing eggs indicate a better set of potential genes, making them more desirable for players trying to strengthen their Monsties. The rarest variant is the rainbow glow, which signals that the egg contains exceptionally strong gene potential.

Because of this system, players who are specifically farming genes will often ignore normal eggs and keep pulling from the nest until they find gold or rainbow glowing eggs. The ultimate goal for many players is to obtain a rainbow egg from the specific monster they want, as this significantly increases the likelihood of getting powerful skills and gene combinations.

      How Monsters Occupy Dens

A monster returning to its den | Image Credit: Digital Braves

To understand efficient gene farming, it is important to understand how monsters interact with dens in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. When monsters are assigned to a habitat, each monster occupies a den and may appear in the overworld near that location.

There are several different states a den can be in depending on the behaviour of the monster that lives there, and these states directly affect how many eggs you can pull from the nest.

In some cases, the monster will be awake and roaming outside the den. When this happens, players can still enter the den and attempt to collect eggs, but the opportunity is limited. Rudy will begin warning you as you continue interacting with the nest, indicating that the monster may return soon. Because of this, players usually only get one or two egg pulls before being forced to leave.

Another scenario occurs when the monster is inside the den but asleep. While this might seem like a safer opportunity to gather eggs, the result is actually similar. You will still have a limited number of pulls before the monster wakes up, meaning you will typically only be able to check one or two eggs before your time runs out.

These situations make it difficult to reliably farm high-quality eggs because the limited number of pulls prevents players from cycling through many options.

The Best Situation for Gene Farming

The most efficient scenario for farming genes happens when a monster retreats back to its den after a battle with the player.

When this occurs, the monster will return to its den and fall asleep. Unlike the previous situations, this state allows players to interact with the nest without any limit on the number of egg pulls. In other words, you can continuously pull eggs from the nest until you find one with the glow you want.

This creates the ideal environment for gene farming. Since you are not restricted to just one or two attempts, you can keep cycling through eggs until a gold or rainbow glow appears. This dramatically increases your chances of finding high-quality gene combinations.

If certain rare monsters are hard to find, you can release their eggs back into the wild, which forces them to spawn as overworld monsters. You can then track them, battle, and use Paintballs to make them retreat to a den for guaranteed rainbow gene farming.

Using Paintballs to Force Monster Retreats

Player using the Paintball | Image Credit: Digital Braves

The most reliable way to create this ideal farming scenario is by using the Paintball item during battles.

Paintballs increase the chance that a monster will retreat back to its den after being defeated. The typical method is to begin a battle with the monster you want eggs from and weaken it until its health is low. Once the monster’s health has been reduced significantly, you use a Paintball before finishing the fight.

Although Paintballs do not guarantee that a monster will retreat, they greatly increase the odds. Using Paintballs is ideal because nests almost always have two egg spots, allowing repeated pulls until the perfect gene appears.

At this point, you can continue interacting with the nest indefinitely until you obtain an egg with the glow level you are looking for, ideally a rainbow egg.

The Quick Finish Mechanic | Image Credit: Digital Braves

Another useful trick when farming is the Quick Finish mechanic. Once your Rider and Monsties are significantly stronger than the monsters in a region, the game allows you to instantly finish battles without going through the full turn-based fight. This lets you clear encounters much faster while still obtaining the rewards from that battle.

When using this method for gene farming, players can start the fight, throw a Paintball, and immediately finish the battle if they are strong enough. This speeds up the process dramatically, allowing you to quickly force monsters to retreat to their dens without spending time on a full battle. Once the monster retreats, you can head to the den and begin repeatedly pulling eggs until you find the rainbow glow you are looking for.

Why Strength Matters in Gene Farming

Because this method relies on defeating monsters and forcing them to retreat, your Rider and Monstie team need to be strong enough to handle the monster you are targeting. If you cannot reliably defeat the monster, you will not be able to trigger the retreat mechanic that makes infinite egg pulling possible.

This means that gene farming is usually something players do after they have already progressed through the game and strengthened their team. Once you are capable of defeating monsters consistently, the Paintball retreat method becomes one of the most reliable ways to farm high-quality eggs.

Farming Eggs for Monsters You Already Know

A standard egg with no glow | Image Credit: Digital Braves

Another important limitation is that this method works best with monsters you have already defeated before. In most cases, players will first encounter a new monster species and obtain its egg randomly by exploring dens within its habitat.

Once you have successfully hatched that monster and registered it, you can release it back into the habitat through the game’s ecosystem systems. From that point on, you will be able to encounter the monster in the overworld and fight it normally. This is what allows you to trigger the retreat mechanic and begin farming its eggs more efficiently.

For monsters you have never encountered before, you will usually need to rely on the traditional method of entering random dens and hoping their eggs appear in the habitat egg pool.

Why You May Need to Farm the Same Monster Repeatedly

When farming genes in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, obtaining a single egg from a monster is usually not enough. Even if the egg comes from the species you want, the genes it carries may not always be the exact ones you are looking for. Different eggs from the same monster can contain different skills, stat bonuses, or gene placements within the gene grid. Because of this, players often farm the same monster multiple times in order to find stronger versions of certain genes or combinations that better fit their desired build.

Another reason players repeatedly farm the same monster is to collect genes that can later be transferred through the Rite of Channeling. Sometimes a monster may possess a skill that is particularly valuable for another Monstie, making it worth farming even if you do not plan to use that species directly. By collecting multiple eggs, players can build a pool of useful genes that can be moved onto their main Monsties later. This process is a key part of building optimized teams, which is why repeated farming of specific monsters becomes a normal part of the progression loop.

      Farming the Best Genes Efficiently

Ultimately, gene farming in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection revolves around controlling the conditions under which you collect eggs. While standard dens only allow a small number of egg pulls, forcing a monster to retreat creates a den where you can pull eggs indefinitely.

By weakening monsters, using Paintballs to increase retreat chances, and tracking them back to their dens, players can repeatedly search for gold or rainbow glowing eggs from the exact monster they want. This dramatically increases the efficiency of farming powerful genes and makes it far easier to build a team of highly optimised Monsties.

For players who want to maximise the strength of their Monsties, mastering this loop of battling, forcing retreats, and farming eggs is one of the most effective strategies in the game.

      Conclusion

In short, the most effective way to farm strong genes in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is to force monsters to retreat to their dens and collect eggs there. Normally, dens only allow a limited number of egg pulls before the monster returns or wakes up, which makes it difficult to search for high-quality eggs. However, when a monster retreats after a battle, it will fall asleep in its den and allow players to repeatedly interact with the nest without any limit.

By weakening a monster in battle and using a Paintball to increase its retreat chance, players can track it back to its den and begin farming eggs from that specific monster. This allows you to continuously pull eggs until you find one with a gold or rainbow glow, which indicates better gene potential. Since every egg in that den will belong to the monster that retreated, this method also makes it much easier to target specific species for gene farming.

For rarer monsters that are hard to find, releasing their eggs back into the wild forces them to spawn as overworld monsters. You can then use Paintballs to make them retreat to a den, giving you access to guaranteed rainbow gene farming.

Over time, repeatedly farming these retreat dens will allow players to collect stronger gene combinations and transferable skills, making it much easier to optimise their Monsties through the Rite of Channeling system.
