Nihon Falcom has announced a new console project tied to the 45th anniversary of its Dragon Slayer series. Currently going by the name “Dragon Slayer Project,” the title is still tentative. No genre, platforms, or release date have been shared at this time.
The Dragon Slayer series goes back to 1984, when the first game launched on the PC-8801. It was marketed as a “new-type, real-type role-playing game” and stood out for its straightforward approach to combat with players attacking enemies simply by walking into them. The game also featured a progression system where characters had to physically return home to bank their experience points and items, and it included puzzles that required specific items and magic to solve. It earned a strong reputation among PC users of the era as a standout early action RPG.

The series continued to grow from there, with follow-up titles including Xanadu, Romancia, Legacy of the Wizard, and Sorcerian all releasing under the Dragon Slayer name.
The sixth game in the series, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, Nihon Falcom took a different direction from its predecessors. It shifted to a command-based battle system and put a stronger focus on characters, world-building, and storytelling. That game eventually spun off into its own series The Legend of Heroes, which later gave rise to the long-running Trails RPG franchise, starting with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.
