Kohei Tanaka, the composer behind the music of the Sakura Wars series since 1996, has dropped a hint that a new project is on the way for the franchise as it marks its 30th anniversary this year.
Writing on his personal X account on February 24, Tanaka confirmed that a new Sakura Wars project is in development and that he expects a formal announcement to come sometime in spring. However, he was clear about one thing: whatever it is, it is not a game.

The post came after a bit of unintended confusion. An earlier message from Tanaka about “working on a major track” was picked up by fans who assumed it was connected to Sakura Wars. Tanaka clarified that the post had nothing to do with the series — but in doing so, he also let slip that there is, in fact, a separate Sakura Wars-related project he is involved with.
Reaction from fans has been a mixed bag. Some Japanese commenters expressed disappointment that a new game is not on the table, while others were simply glad to hear that the series is still receiving some kind of attention. Fan speculation has largely pointed toward an anime or stage play as the most likely candidates, though nothing has been confirmed.

Tanaka himself said he was caught off guard by how much buzz his vague post generated, and that it was heartwarming to see how much love the series still has from its fanbase. That said, he has made clear he will not be sharing any additional details before the official announcement.
