Crimson Desert developer Pearl Abyss has revealed that it rejected a proposal from Sony to make its upcoming open-world action-adventure a timed PlayStation exclusive. According to a translation of the studio’s investor relations documents, Sony offered to act as publisher, which would have prevented the game from launching on Xbox for a full year and given Sony control over PC distribution rights.
Pearl Abyss Explains the Decision on Crimson Desert

Although the offer appealed to Pearl Abyss due to Sony’s marketing reach and incentives, the studio decided to self-publish. It explained that it already has global publishing capabilities and overseas branches, making self-publishing more practical. Using its own resources also allows the studio to keep a larger share of profits.
Pearl Abyss contrasted its choice with Shift Up, which accepted a timed PlayStation deal for Stellar Blade. Unlike Shift Up, Pearl Abyss already manages international releases and can handle publishing independently.
Release and Media Previews

Pearl Abyss has not announced an official release date yet. However, it plans to showcase a playable Crimson Desert build to media in Paris this week. The studio will also present the game to the public at G-Star in November. Pearl Abyss confirmed that self-publishing is “99 percent certain” and that DokeV, its creature-collecting game, will launch around 18 months after Crimson Desert.
Financial Considerations for Crimson Desert

In typical exclusivity contracts, platform holders take roughly 30 percent of revenue, with the remaining 70 percent split between developer and publisher. By self-publishing, Pearl Abyss maintains more control over profits while ensuring the game reaches all platforms simultaneously.
About Pearl Abyss and Upcoming Projects

Pearl Abyss is best known for Black Desert Online and is currently developing DokeV, a creature-collecting adventure. The studio emphasized that self-publishing allows it to fully manage its creative output and release strategy while leveraging existing international branches.
Community and Industry Impact

Sony’s attempt to secure Crimson Desert as a timed exclusive follows similar deals, such as with Black Myth: Wukong, which sparked debate over platform availability. Pearl Abyss’ decision highlights the growing trend of developers weighing exclusivity against autonomy and broader market access.
For fans eager to see Crimson Desert in action, a 50-minute gameplay video is available online, offering a glimpse of its snowy landscapes, massive open-world vistas, and intricate combat.
With Crimson Desert self-publishing, players can expect a simultaneous launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, ensuring the game reaches a wider audience without platform restrictions.
