Sony has emphasized that the PlayStation 5 is far from the end of its lifecycle, despite surpassing 84 million sales worldwide. During its recent earnings call, the company highlighted PS5’s strong growth and active user base.

However, Sony remained tight-lipped about any potential PlayStation 6 plans. Analysts and fans continue to speculate, but the company insists it is still focused on expanding the PS5 platform before revealing its next-generation vision.
PS5 Still Growing Strong

Sony reaffirmed its commitment to growing the PlayStation 5 installed base. The company said the console is still early in its lifecycle despite impressive sales. CFO Lin Tao explained that PS5 is “only in the middle” of its life. He highlighted the large number of active users still enjoying PS4, even more than a decade after its launch. Last year, Sony reported that roughly half of its monthly active users still played on PS4.

“This year, in year six since launch, PS5 has continued to grow its installed base,” Tao said. “Compared to conventional console life cycles, it seems to be lasting longer. Many active users enjoy PS4 and PS5. From that perspective, we believe PS5 is only in the middle of its journey. We plan to expand it further.”
No Comment on PlayStation 6
Despite repeated questions about next-generation hardware, Sony declined to share any PlayStation 6 plans. Tao said, “As for future launches and successors, we are not in a position to comment, and that’s all we have.”

Earlier this summer, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) discussed its future console strategy. The company confirmed it is committed to “exploring a new and enhanced way for players” to engage with games and services. CEO Hideaki Nishino added, “While we cannot share further details at this stage, the future of the platform is top of mind.”
Future Rumors and PS5 Longevity
Reports suggest Sony’s PlayStation 6 could include a Nintendo Switch-style handheld with TV docking capabilities. However, the company has not confirmed these rumors.

For now, PS5 shows no signs of slowing. Sales remain strong and nearly match PS4’s lifecycle. Sony appears focused on growing the platform before unveiling the next-generation console.
