Chinese folklore has long provided a foundation for some of the most imaginative stories in gaming, but Sword Sage: Awakening takes that tradition and fuses it with a striking new aesthetic. In an interview with the developers Sword Panda Limited, they shared how ancient myths, cultural motifs, and modern design philosophies are shaping their ambitious action RPG.
Legends as the Foundation

When asked about the main sources of inspiration, the developers explained that the legendary duel between Sword Sage and the Yue Maiden in Wu Yue Chunqiu was the central reference point. Beyond this, mythological collections such as Youyang Zazu and Soushen Ji also informed the supernatural layers of the world. By pulling from these diverse texts, the team is grounding their fantasy in recognizable cultural roots while reimagining them for a modern audience.
The Mechanical Punk Aesthetic

One of the most striking aspects of Sword Sage: Awakening is its use of bronze, metallic, and mechanical motifs alongside traditional Chinese settings. According to the developers, this direction came from a love of the “mechanical punk” style found in games like BioShock, Dishonored, Wolfenstein, and Xuan-Yuan Sword. They also noted that ancient China itself had references to “mechanical arts,” making the fusion feel authentic. “We wanted to create a style that feels cool to both Eastern and Western audiences,” they said, underscoring the game’s global ambitions.
Exploration Beyond Combat

The team also revealed that the game will not limit players to fighting alone. Designed with a sandbox-level structure, Sword Sage: Awakening will emphasize collection and exploration. Players will need to gather materials and forge weapons, blending action with resource management. This approach allows for pacing between intense combat and quieter, more strategic gameplay moments.
Finding the Right Difficulty

Souls-like titles are infamous for their steep learning curves, but the developers made it clear that Sword Sage: Awakening is aiming for accessibility. “It’s not a hardcore Souls-like. At most, you could call it a ‘SoulLite,’” they explained. The game will include multiple difficulty settings and assist options so that both newcomers and seasoned players can find a challenge that feels right for them.
Beyond the Souls-like Label

Although comparisons to Dark Souls are inevitable, the developers stressed that their project is first and foremost an action RPG. They grew up playing classics like Castlevania, Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda, and those influences shape the game just as much as modern trends. “Intense combat, intricate map design, and a rich collection system are what we’ve always pursued,” they said, positioning Sword Sage: Awakening as a fresh take within the broader ARPG landscape.
A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation
With its blend of Chinese mythology, mechanical punk aesthetics, and accessible ARPG design, Sword Sage: Awakening is shaping up to be more than just another Souls-like entry. It’s a project that bridges East and West, honoring tradition while exploring futuristic creativity. If the developers’ vision comes to life, the game could stand out as one of the most distinctive action RPGs in recent years.
The game currently has no release date yet and will be available on PC via Steam, and can be added into your wishlist.
