Wizards of the Coast dropped a huge bomb at Gen Con today, announcing their next three-year lineup for Magic: The Gathering (MTG) including the next major story arc as well as crossovers with other franchises like Final Fantasy and Fallout.

At their panel, Wizards announced the next sets for MTG up through 2026- with a new story arc starting this year via the Wilds of Eldraine set, which launches this September.

The set will take place following the end of the Phyrexian invasion in March of the Machine, and will feature more fairy tale-inspired characters.

The 2023 releases kick off with the aforementioned Wilds of Eldraine set, whose story arc is set to go on until 2026. Other notable highlights include the debut of the Magic The Gathering- Doctor Who set, which sees four Commander decks built on the classic Sci Fi franchise.

The full 2023 schedule is as follows:

      September 2023- WIlds of Eldraine

Kicking off the next multi-year story arc, WIlds of Eldraine will feature a storybook setting and storybook-inspired characters set in the aftermath of the Phyrexian invasion. One of the preview pieces at Gen Con shows what appears to be a goose hydra, so you know it’s going to be a good release for MTG.

October 2023- Magic: The Gathering- Doctor Who

As one of the oldest Sci-Fi franchises, there’s no shortage of Doctor Who fans in the world. This set will feature four pre constructed Commander Decks, as well as special Tardis-style framed cards as well as serialized releases for the most dedicated of Whovians.

Q4 2023- Lost Caverns of Ixalan

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

This set sees the return to the plane of Ixalan- best known for its gnarly Dinosaur creatures and multi-headed Elder Dinosaurs. Just like last year’s Phyrexia: All Will Be One, this set will also feature a thematic crossover- this time with Universal’s Jurassic Park series.

      2024 Releases

2024 sees a focus on mysteries in MTG, with a return to Ravinica via multiple different sets. Crossover fans don’t have to feel left out, though- the Gen Con panel confirms that MTG will have two more crossovers in 2024 with Assassin’s Creed as well as the Fallout series.

      Q1 2024- That’s a lot of Ravinica

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

This quarter sees three sets themed around the mystery-solving setting of Ravinica. The first, Ravinica Remastered, gives players a chance to collect the entire Ravinica block in one set- reprinting classic cards from the beloved set.

For those who want to see Ravinica in a new light, there’s Murders at Karlov Manor- this MTG spin on the detective genre will feature clues and whodunnits for all the sleuths of the world.

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

Finally, you can’t have a detective story without mentioning Clue (Or Cluedo if you’re from our side of the world). MTG is introducing Ravinica: Clue Edition, which is a stand-alone game that mixes the two IPs together for all the fun of solving a grisly murder.

      March 2024- Fallout

A beloved gaming franchise, Bethesda’s Fallout series comes to Magic: The Gathering in March 2024 with pre-constructed commander decks. Not much else was shown about the set, so it’s fingers crossed for a powerful Deathclaw commander.

Q2 2024- Outlaws of Thunder Junction

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

What do you get when you mix high fantasy and cowboys? This, apparently. Outlaws of Thunder Junction is MTG’s take on the western genre, complete with fantasy races wearing the appropriate hats.

      July 2024- Assassin’s Creed

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

As part of the Universe’s Beyond set, Assassin’s Creed is the second major crossover happening with MTG for 2024. This set will celebrate the entirety of the Assassin’s Creed series, adding new mechanics as well as reprinting old classics with an Assassin’s Creed coat of paint.

      2024, Unannounced- Modern Horizons 3

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

Modern Horizons is back, bringing a draft format as well as double-faced cards and planeswalkers.

      Q3 2024- Bloomburrow

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

Ever thought there were too many humans in MTG? Bloomburrow ditches humans in favor of anthropomorphic animal friends, going on important quests together.

Q4 2024- Duskmourn: House of Horror

According to the Gen Con panel, this MTG set draws inspiration from 1980s era horror movies, straight down to being set in a haunted house. Player beware, you’re in for a scare.

      2025 Releases

2025 is set to be a wild year for MTG- on one hand, we have two popular planes returning with Innistrad and Tarkir, all while we also get multiplanar death races via the upcoming Codename: Tennis set. All this goes hand in hand with the Final Fantasy crossover set, too, celebrating one of the oldest JRPG franchises around.

      Unannounced, 2025- Innistrad Remastered

This set is a return to the gothic horror world of Innistrad- which means fans can probably expect vampires, werewolves and maybe even the odd eldritch horror in one curated, draftable set.

      Unannounced, 2025- Final Fantasy

A must-buy for fans of franchises featuring games with free trials that include the Stormblood expansion, the Final Fantasy crossover with MTG will feature the entirety of the games’ history- including the recently released Final Fantasy XVI.

      Q1 2025- Codename: Tennis

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

A bold new direction for MTG shown off at Gen Con, this as-of-yet-unnamed set will feature racing with a uniquely Magic twist. like a muscle car with a spirit coming out of the engine.

      Unannounced, 2025- Codename: Ultimate

Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

This set will feature a return to the plane of Tarkir- home to powerful dragons and is sure to be on the radar of anyone who likes them big, scaly and flying.

      Unannounced, 2025- Codename: Volleyball

      MTG Gen Con 2023
Image Credit: Wizards of the Coast

Described as a space opera, this set will see players putting on their Sci Fi hats with everything from exosuits to freaky looking aliens.

      Unannounced, 2025- Codename: Wrestling

For fans of all things Faeries, Codename: Wrestling will bring you back to the plane of Lorwyn. There’s no enchanted forest quite like a Lorwyn enchanted forest, after all.

      2026 Releases

Considering how far into the future 2026 is, it makes sense how vague the details would be. 2026 does, however, bring with it a return to Strixhaven, as well as the epic conclusion to the storyline set in motion during Wilds of Eldraine.

These plots are reflected via the Codename: Yachting for Strixhaven, as well as Codename: Ziplining for the finale sets, respectively.

      New Secret Lair

Of course, fans of the MTG Secret Lair series weren’t left out at Gen Con. Wizards of the Coast also announced a new limited print Commander Deck, titled Angels: They’re Just Like Us But Cooler And With Wings featuring new art, as well as a mechanic that hasn’t been seen since the 2001 Magic: The Gathering video game.

It goes on sale on August 10th and will be available for 149.99 USD.
