Toyota Connected North America, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, has announced it’s developing a new game engine called Flourite. The engine is designed to run high-performance 3D graphics on lower-end hardware, particularly for in-vehicle display systems.
Flourite works alongside Flutter, Google’s user interface framework, and uses the Dart programming language for both game logic and UI development. The engine focuses on making 3D graphics and interactive elements run smoothly on embedded systems found in cars.

The engine uses a high-performance Entity Component System (ECS) core written in C++. This design helps maximize performance on weaker hardware while still allowing developers to use Dart and familiar game development tools. Flourite includes model-defined trigger touch zones, which let digital artists create interactive areas directly in 3D modeling software like Blender. Developers can then connect these zones to specific actions, making it easier to build 3D interfaces that users can interact with naturally.
For graphics, the engine uses Google’s Filament renderer to deliver what Toyota calls “console-grade” 3D rendering. This system uses modern graphics APIs to produce high-quality visuals. The engine also supports Flutter’s Hot Reload feature, allowing developers to see changes to their scenes within seconds. This speeds up the development process by making it faster to test edits and iterations.

At the Free and Open Source Software Developers’ European Meeting (FOSDEM) 2026 in Brussels on February 1, Toyota Connected North America explained why they created Flourite. According to Game*Spark, the company looked at existing game engines for their automotive 3D displays but found that popular options like Unity came with high licensing costs or required too many system resources.
While Flourite’s primary purpose is developing 3D displays for Toyota vehicles, its open-source nature means developers outside the automotive industry could potentially use it for other projects.
