2018 has been a magnificent year for video games in general, particularity those released on the consoles as developers have reached a point where they are able to squeeze as much power as they are able to from the hardware that they have been working on for many years by now. The team at GamerBraves has gone through many such games the past year, so we will be listing some of our favourite games of 2018 here.
Just like their movie counterparts, games based on superheroes can be a mixed bag. While Spider-Man had great outings in the past, few of the more recent ones were lacklustre or just downright bad. Enter Insomniac Games’ first foray into a licenced property, and spoiler warning, they have done an excellent job. Not only is this one of the best superhero games ever made, this is also perhaps one of the better games made in 2018.
The game strikes a fine balance between making you the superhero you have always wanted to be but also making it challenging enough that if you are caught off guard, you will be beaten down. The open world concept here is nothing new, but Insomniac managed to inject enough life into New York where it really feels alive instead of just being one big map without little to see and do. More often than not, we found ourselves swinging from one end of the city to the other just to check out the city without doing anything else.
Hitman 2016 perfected the formula the series has introduced and fine-tuned since its debut in 2000, but the experience was marred by its episodic nature, at least to some. In hindsight, that was acceptable at least from a gameplay perspective as it pretty much encouraged players to replay whatever little maps they had access to at that time. Hitman 2 addressed most of the criticisms against it and we finally get an entry in the franchise which is at its apex.
More ways to assassinate people and thus more ways to mess up, Hitman 2 is the most fun the games have ever been. Even newcomers should have no issues, as the game includes many assist tools, while veterans can simply disable them as necessary.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Every game Rockstar releases surpass the previous one, and that is especially true with Red Dead Redemption 2. Not only does this surpass the original in every conceivable way, it is also the most ambitious game by the developer to date.
This prequel has you taking on the role of one of the most interesting and well-written protagonists in recent memory, in the form of Arthur Morgan. Arthur is an enforcer for Dutch van Der Linde’s gang, which you may recall from the first game. This is a humongous game, and it shows in the story as it does not rush you along and wants you to soak in the vestiges of a dying era that is the Wild West.
In a seemingly one of the most unexpected of collaborations, Nintendo and Cygames put out this gem of a mobile RPG in a market which is arguably saturated by now. Nintendo up to this point already had a string of successful releases in the mobile space, and with Cygames well versed in the genre, this could not have been a better match. The main thing that makes Dragalia Lost stand out from the competition the level of depth and detail that it offers the more hardcore fanbase, while simultaneously being accessible to newcomers.
The lore in Dragalia Lost is several notches above games of its ilk, with the developer putting in the effort to actually make you care about the world and its inhabitants. Cygames has always made you care about the characters that join your party, as they all get a series of short stories. Gameplay is nothing particularly groundbreaking but is polished and serves its purpose, without being dull.
PUBG Mobile is undoubtedly one of the hottest mobile games in 2018 with over 200M downloads worldwide and countless awards received. Compared to the PC version, the touch controls are newbie-friendly and easy to master. Those who are new can enjoy without having to meet the pros too early thanks to the ranking system as well.
Being a faithful adaptation of the PC version for mobile devices, the game has successfully changed the way people perceive and think about mobile gaming. In 2019, you can expect the PUBG Mobile fanbase to grow even bigger.
Ragnarok M: Eternal Love
Ragnarok M: Eternal Love has been the most popular game in 2018’s GamerBraves community and of course, it is one of the most downloaded games in 2018. Although it is basically Ragnarok Online on mobile, the mobile version allows fans to enjoy the game whenever and wherever they are. It brings back many memories of our younger days too.
