TAITO has officially announced a video game adaptation of The Detective Is Already Dead for the Nintendo Switch, marking the first game based on the popular light novel series published under Kadokawa Corporation’s MF Bunko J label. At the time of writing, the company has not revealed the game’s official title, genre, or release window.
Despite the limited details, the announcement represents a significant expansion of the franchise into interactive media for the first time.
A Growing Multimedia Franchise

Originally written by Nigojū and illustrated by Umibōzu, The Detective Is Already Dead first launched as a light novel series in 2019 and has since grown into a multi-format franchise that includes manga adaptations and an anime television series. The novels blend mystery, adventure, and romantic comedy elements, helping the series build a strong fanbase both in Japan and internationally.
As of recent circulation milestones, the light novel series has surpassed one million copies in circulation, highlighting its continued popularity ahead of its upcoming return to television.
The newly announced Nintendo Switch title represents the franchise’s first dedicated step into the gaming space.
Revisiting Kimihiko and Siesta’s Story

The story follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a high school student who frequently finds himself caught in dangerous incidents due to what he calls a natural “trouble magnet” tendency. His life changes after meeting Siesta, a mysterious self-proclaimed legendary detective, during a hijacked flight.
After becoming her assistant, the pair spend years traveling the world solving cases together—until Siesta’s death. One year later, Kimihiko becomes involved in new investigations that begin to reopen unresolved mysteries connected to his former partner and the shadowy organization known as SPES.
This mix of emotional storytelling and conspiracy-driven mystery forms the narrative backbone of the series and is likely to influence the structure of the upcoming adaptation.
Anime Season 2 Arrives in October 2026

The game announcement arrives at a notable time for the franchise, as The Detective Is Already Dead anime Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in October 2026, following the original 12-episode first season that aired between July and September 2021.
With the returning anime expected to renew interest in the series, the Nintendo Switch game could serve as part of a broader push to expand the property’s presence across multiple media formats.
More details about gameplay direction, release timing, and the project’s official title are expected to be announced by TAITO in the future.
