When Ghost of Tsushima released in 2020, it redefined what a samurai epic could look like in games. Five years later, Sucker Punch returns with Ghost of Yōtei, set in the snowy expanses of Hokkaido. With a new protagonist, a stronger focus on myth, and an evolved combat system, the studio is expanding the series while honoring its roots. We spoke with Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming, who shared insights into the decisions that shaped the game — from cultural research to world design.
Why Set the Story Centuries After Tsushima?

The team wanted a fresh start while still carrying the Ghost’s legacy. Fleming explained, “We wanted a location that felt familiar yet undiscovered,” and Hokkaido’s harsh winters and Mount Yōtei created the perfect contrast to Tsushima’s lush landscapes.
Living Up to the Legacy of Ghost of Tsushima

Comparisons to Tsushima were inevitable, but Fleming sees that as a strength. “What we learned from Tsushima is how much people respond to authenticity,” he said. This time, the team doubled down on research while allowing more room for myth and legend to guide the narrative.
Ainu Culture and Mythology

Where Tsushima leaned on history, Yōtei builds on folklore. Fleming stressed that cultural respect was central: “It was vital for us to work with historians and cultural experts so that these stories are told with respect.” Myths don’t just color the world — they drive quests, encounters, and the hero’s journey.
Evolving Combat and Exploration

Combat and stealth remain familiar, but the world itself forces adaptation. “In Hokkaido, the environment is more than a backdrop — it’s alive, it’s dangerous, and it changes how you fight and explore,” Fleming noted. Weather, wildlife, and frozen terrain reshape both battles and traversal.
Building an Open World That Feels Alive

The team wanted to avoid overwhelming players with filler content in Ghost of Yōtei. Instead, Fleming said, “We’re not trying to overwhelm players.” Every region was designed with intent, offering mythic duels, storms, and folklore-inspired encounters that stand out instead of blending into checklists.
