We had the opportunity to interview key figures behind the highly anticipated Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land, the latest installment in the beloved Atelier series. Junzo Hosoi, the brand director of Gust and producer of the project, along with Shinichi Abiko, the game director, shared fascinating insights into the development process and what players can expect from this new entry.

A New Heroine Emerges: The Challenge of Surpassing Ryza

The interview kicked off with a discussion about the pressure to create a protagonist that could rival the immense popularity of Ryza from the previous Atelier games. Hosoi didn’t shy away from acknowledging this challenge, stating, “Yes, there was definitely a lot of pressure.” He elaborated on the team’s goal to surpass their previous work, emphasizing that both the illustrator and the development team invested significant thought and effort into crafting a character that could potentially outshine Ryza.

Hosoi offers fans a glimpse into the competitive nature of character design in the Atelier series, highlighting the careful consideration that goes into creating memorable protagonists. He also sets high expectations for Yumia as a character, suggesting that players can look forward to a heroine who is not only visually appealing but also compelling in terms of personality and narrative role.

Hosoi provided insight into the creative process, saying, “As you know, the illustrator for this title is Benitama, but I have a close relationship with Toridamono, the illustrator for Atelier Ryza. I was really troubled by the thought of how to create a character that could surpass Ryza. Our goal was to outdo the previous game and deliver an even better work for everyone.”

A Fresh Artistic Direction: Benitama’s Unique Style

In a departure from previous titles, Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land introduces a new artistic style courtesy of illustrator Benitama. Hosoi shared the intriguing story of how they discovered Benitama’s work, stating, “I first came across Benitama’s work on Twitter, now X, back in 2018.” The decision to bring Benitama on board was driven by a desire to offer players a different experience compared to the more anime-style designs typical of the series.

Hosoi explained the reasoning behind this choice: “When it came time to choose an artist for this project, I wanted to bring someone on board who could provide a different experience compared to the more anime-style designs we’ve typically used in the series. My goal was to strike a balance between the characters and the art style to give players a richer experience. I felt that Benitama’s art perfectly fit this vision.”

He further elaborated on how the collaboration came about: “We were introduced to Benitama through Toridamono, and that’s how we brought him on as the illustrator for this project.” This behind-the-scenes look at the selection process highlights the interconnectedness of the artistic community and the careful consideration that goes into choosing the right artist for each Atelier title.

Mature Protagonists and Deeper Storytelling: A New Direction for Atelier

One of the most notable changes in Atelier Yumia is the shift towards an older cast of characters. Hosoi confirmed that this was an intentional decision, aimed at exploring more mature themes and depicting growth beyond the coming-of-age stories of previous titles.

“Yes, that was intentional,” Hosoi affirmed. He went on to explain the reasoning behind this shift: “In the previous Atelier Ryza series, the story focused on the growth of young boys and girls as they matured into adulthood. Since that story was centered on the process of growing up, we naturally started with a younger character. For this project, we wanted to create a next-generation RPG that would appeal to a global audience. We felt that the heroine, both physically and mentally, needed to be strong and resilient. Our goal was to depict a more mature form of growth—growth after already becoming an adult.”

Hosoi further elaborated on the storytelling opportunities this change provides: “This approach allowed us to tell a more serious, in-depth story, not just for Yumia but for the other characters as well, all of whom have well-developed backgrounds. This depth of character and story could only be conveyed through someone with a certain level of age and experience.”

Evolution of Combat: Balancing Action and Strategy

Game Director Shinichi Abiko addressed the shift towards more action-based combat in Atelier Yumia.”While acknowledging the change, Abiko assured fans that the core philosophy of the Atelier series remains intact, particularly regarding the crucial role of item usage in battles.

“As you mentioned, this title does incorporate more action-oriented elements, similar to an action game,” Abiko confirmed. He explained the reasoning behind this decision: “This decision was influenced by the feedback we received from players after Atelier Ryza 2 and 3. While the presentation is different, our approach to designing this battle system is still aligned with the core philosophy of the Atelier series.”

Abiko emphasized the continued importance of strategy and item use: “What we wanted to create was an RPG that still maintains the signature Atelier style. In this case, that means battles where the use of items is crucial. For example, some players like to create incredibly powerful items that allow them to defeat a boss in one hit. That thinking hasn’t changed in this game.”

He also addressed concerns about accessibility: “Now, for players who may not be comfortable with action-heavy gameplay, we haven’t excluded them. In this game, we’ve made it easier to dodge or defend, so players won’t find themselves dying too easily. Additionally, players can continue to create powerful weapons or defensive items.”

A World Where Alchemy is Taboo: Exploring New Narrative Territory

Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of Atelier Yumia is its unique approach to world-building. For the first time in the series, alchemy is portrayed as a forbidden and feared practice. Hosoi explained the reasoning behind this decision: “In my thought process, up until now, we’ve portrayed alchemy in our games as something that has been forgotten or abandoned. However, framing it as a forbidden practice is a first for the series.”

He elaborated on the narrative possibilities this opens up: “In the Atelier games, alchemy is usually depicted as incredibly powerful, almost limitless in its capabilities. But with something that powerful, wouldn’t there be people who fear it? I wanted to explore this aspect in Atelier Yumia—the fear and taboo surrounding an all-powerful force like alchemy. This is one of the unique elements we wanted to bring to the story.”

This approach to alchemy within the game world promises to add a layer of tension and complexity to the narrative, potentially leading to thought-provoking storylines and character conflicts. It also allows the series to explore themes of power, responsibility, and societal fear of the unknown, adding depth to the typically light-hearted Atelier universe.

A Message to Southeast Asian Fans: Gratitude and Excitement

Concluding the interview, Hosoi took a moment to express heartfelt gratitude to the game’s Southeast Asian fanbase. He acknowledged the crucial role that fan feedback and enthusiasm play in motivating the development team.

“First of all, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to all the Southeast Asian players for their continued support of the Atelier series and the Gust brand,” Hosoi began. He continued, “It’s because of everyone’s support—through feedback on social media and the enthusiasm we see—that we are motivated and encouraged during development. Thanks to this incredible response, we’re able to announce a new Atelier title today, and we’re truly grateful for that.”

Hosoi went on to describe Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land as a landmark project for the series: “This is the largest-scale development project in the Atelier series, and it’s a title that presents new challenges. We really hope you’ll pick it up and give it a try. Please continue to support us in the future. Thank you!”
