Remedy Entertainment took the stage at Gamescom Latin America to share a brand new developer diary for CONTROL Resonant, the upcoming sequel to the 2019 hit CONTROL. Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen joined the development team to walk through what players can expect from the game, which is set to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac.
The game is being developed and published by Remedy, with Annapurna Pictures co-financing and co-producing the project as part of an ongoing partnership with the studio.
One of the biggest topics in the developer diary is the shift in location. The original CONTROL was set almost entirely inside the brutalist, ever-changing walls of the Oldest House. CONTROL Resonant moves the action outside into a reimagined version of Manhattan, though this is far from a normal city. The environment is described as constantly shifting and bending its own rules under the influence of paranatural forces, which alter gravity and physical laws throughout the game world.
Art Director Elmeri Raitanen explained the thinking behind this change: “What the Oldest House is to a boring office building, the Manhattan of CONTROL Resonant is to a regular city. For years, the players, developers and Dylan alike have been staring at the brutalist concrete walls of the Oldest House. It’s time to get some fresh air.”
The art direction aims to make the city feel familiar at first glance before slowly revealing just how warped it has become. Remedy says the open outdoor spaces allow for larger environments compared to the tighter corridors of the first game, while still keeping the surreal tone the series is known for.
Players take on the role of Dylan Faden as they explore multiple areas across this distorted Manhattan. Combat carries over the series’ focus on environmental interaction, alongside elemental powers and a transforming melee weapon called the Aberrant. The game also introduces a progression system where abilities evolve based on the choices players make throughout the game.
Kasurinen described the experience as “a paranatural action that takes place in an expansive, reality-warping playground of choice, power, and consequence.”
This is the third developer diary Remedy has released for CONTROL Resonant. Earlier announcements confirmed the game will support the latest Nvidia RTX technologies, including RTX Mega Geometry, Ray Reconstruction, and DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation.
