2K and Gearbox Software released a new video ahead of Borderlands 4’s launch next month. In it, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford reflects on how Japanese games shaped both his career and the upcoming entry in the series.
The ten-minute feature first appeared on 2K Japan’s channel before Gearbox uploaded it.
From Donkey Kong to Borderlands

Pitchford recalls how playing Donkey Kong for the first time introduced him to the magic of Japanese game design. That moment, followed by years of discovering Japanese craftsmanship and culture, set him on the path to becoming a developer.
“I am a game maker because of Japan,” Pitchford says in the video.

Japanese Influence on Borderlands 4
Japanese creativity also inspired Borderlands 4. Pitchford explains that themes of freedom vs. order shape the game’s design. He also highlights the artistry of Japanese storytelling as a key influence behind the franchise’s mix of humor, chaos, and narrative depth.

Pitchford notes that the game’s seamless open world and collaborative spirit reflect lessons he learned from Japanese developers.

A Tribute to Craft and Magic

The video shows Pitchford’s passion for Japanese game craftsmanship. He explains how Japanese artistry connects directly to his love of magic, illusion, and storytelling. Because of this, Borderlands 4 merges technical innovation with a sense of wonder, creating a world where creativity and chaos coexist.

Borderlands 4 launches on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game will also arrive on October 3 for Nintendo Switch 2.
