The average Final Fantasy fan is 42 years old, offering insight into the franchise’s maturing player base ahead of its 38th anniversary this December according to a new study by GEM Partners (via Gamerant).
A Legacy Nearly Four Decades Long

Final Fantasy has remained a cornerstone of the JRPG genre since 1987, becoming one of the longest-running video game franchises to date. With over three decades of entries, spin-offs, and re-releases, the series has cultivated a dedicated following across generations.
According to the latest data, however, the series’ fanbase is showing signs of age. A study surveying 180,000 respondents in Japan found that the average Final Fantasy fan is now 42 years old. While limited to the Japanese market, the results align with similar trends observed in other legacy JRPGs such as Dragon Quest.
Struggles to Reach a New Generation

While the data highlights strong long-term retention, it also suggests a challenge in attracting younger players. Despite mobile titles and high-profile remakes, the average age continues to rise, hinting at a slower growth among newer audiences.
Sales figures appear to support this trend. Final Fantasy 14 remains the franchise’s best-selling title with 24 million units sold, while the original Final Fantasy 7 from 1997 leads the single-player category at around 15 million lifetime sales. More recent entries such as Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have reportedly underperformed compared to internal expectations.
Square Enix Faces a Demographic Hurdle

The situation mirrors the natural life cycle of many long-standing media franchises, where aging audiences eventually outpace new adopters. Still, Square Enix may seek to reverse the trend, especially with rising development costs and a global player base whose average age is closer to 35, according to a recent WFLA study.
