LEVEL-5 has confirmed that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will launch not only on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, but also on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. The puzzle-filled fantasy adventure is now set for a worldwide release “toward the end of 2026,” expanding its platform lineup ahead of launch.
The announcement was shared during the LEVEL-5 Vision 2026 Craftsmanship event, where LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiko Hino also provided new development updates and story details for the long-awaited return of the Layton series.
Development Nears Completion With Focus on Polish and Localization

According to Hino, the core gameplay for the game is nearly complete, with the development team currently focused on visual refinement and overall presentation quality. Japanese voice recording has already been completed, while localization work for international versions is now underway.
Hino also confirmed that development is progressing smoothly, although the team is still refining final elements ahead of launch. A new trailer was showcased alongside the presentation, offering a closer look at the game’s updated visuals and tone.
A New Mystery Begins in Steam Bison

The story of Professor Layton and the New World of Steam takes place one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, also known as Professor Layton and the Lost Future. The adventure begins when Luke Triton travels to America, specifically to a rapidly advancing town called Steam Bison, followed shortly after by Professor Hershel Layton.
Steam Bison is described as a technologically advanced city powered by revolutionary steam innovation, surpassing even London in terms of progress. However, beneath its rapid development lies a hidden mystery that draws Layton and Luke into a new investigation filled with puzzles and intrigue.
More Puzzles Than Ever With QuizKnock Collaboration

LEVEL-5 has confirmed that the game will feature the largest number of puzzles in the series to date. Puzzle design is being handled by QuizKnock, a popular Japanese entertainment and education platform known for blending knowledge and problem-solving into engaging content.
The game will feature interactive puzzle-solving mechanics, hint systems, and town-based progression elements where solving puzzles contributes to the development of Steam Bison itself.
New Features and Gameplay Systems

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam introduces several new features designed to modernize the experience while preserving its classic puzzle-driven gameplay. These include a world map system, updated movement mechanics, Coin Radar mode, and expanded puzzle interaction tools.
Players will also encounter puzzles that directly contribute to town growth, alongside new companion characters and fully 3D cutscenes. The PC version will additionally support mouse controls, offering a more traditional point-and-click experience.
Returning Heroes and New Characters in Steam Bison
The game features the return of Professor Hershel Layton and Luke Triton, alongside a new cast of supporting characters tied to the town of Steam Bison.
New characters include Elinora Allinston and Elida Allinston, twin sisters with mechanical and theatrical talents, inventor Eggmuffin Sonder, town authority Bolt Allinston, and Sheriff Bobsley, a bold but impulsive law enforcer. Other notable characters include Falcon, a treasure-collecting eagle, and Mystella, a fortune teller who tracks unresolved puzzles throughout the story.
Each character contributes to the town’s mystery-driven narrative and helps shape the evolving world around Layton and Luke.
Music and Voice Cast Highlights
The soundtrack and theme song for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam are being composed by Joe Hisaishi, with lyrics and vocals by Lilas Ikuta. LEVEL-5 has described the collaboration as a major highlight of the project, though the full theme song will be revealed at a later date.
The voice cast includes Yo Oizumi as Professor Layton, Mio Imada as Luke Triton, and additional performances from Riho Yoshioka, Mahiro Takasugi, Shinya Kote, Koichi Yamadera, and Akio Otsuka, among others.
Launch Window Set for Late 2026
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is scheduled to launch toward the end of 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. LEVEL-5 has not confirmed a final release date yet, but development is reportedly nearing completion as the team finalizes presentation and localization work.
With its expanded platform support, larger puzzle lineup, and return of the beloved Layton and Luke duo, the upcoming entry marks a major revival for the long-running puzzle adventure series.
