A new chapter in the Resident Evil movie franchise is taking shape, with PlayStation Productions and Constantin Film partnering on a reboot that has sparked a major bidding war among studios. Zach Cregger, known for directing the 2022 horror film Barbarian, is set to helm the project, with John Wick: Chapter 4 writer Shay Hatten attached as co-writer.

The project has attracted significant attention from major studios, with Warner Bros. and Netflix among four companies currently competing for the rights. Constantin Film, which has held the Resident Evil screen rights since the 1990s, will produce alongside PlayStation Productions, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s film and television adaptation division.
This new movie adaptation aims to return the series to its horror roots, with sources indicating the film will stay more faithful to the original games compared to previous adaptations. The franchise’s earlier film series, which starred Milla Jovovich and ran from 2002 to 2016, blended horror, sci-fi, and action elements while achieving significant commercial success, generating over $1.2 billion in worldwide box office revenue.

The announcement comes during a period of renewed interest in the Resident Evil franchise, with recent adaptations including a Netflix series and the film Welcome to Raccoon City. The gaming series itself continues to thrive, with the Resident Evil 4 remake achieving notable success in its release window.
Cregger’s involvement has generated particular excitement for fans of the series, following his successful transition from comedy to horror with Barbarian, which established him as an emerging voice in the genre. His upcoming horror film “Weapons,” starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, has reportedly been receiving positive early feedback.
