Tokyo Xanadu is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and to mark the milestone, Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo spoke with Dengeki Online about the future of the series. During the interview, he explained why it took so long for the studio to move forward with a sequel, even though the team always planned for one.
Kondo said that Tokyo Xanadu, first released in Japan in 2015, was created with the idea of becoming a full series. “We originally created the title under the premise that we’d make a series from it. We never intended to end it with just one game,” he shared. But the plan didn’t unfold as expected.
According to Kondo, Falcom became extremely busy working on the Trails series. With the team’s focus tied up for years, time passed much faster than they realized. “In a blink of an eye, 10 years passed without us even getting started with development of the sequel,” he said.
He also mentioned that Masayuki Kato, Falcom’s late founder, strongly supported the idea of turning Tokyo Xanadu into a series. “He always kept asking us why we don’t turn it into a series. But that’s how we’ve always felt too,” Kondo added.
Now, Falcom has finally reached a point where it can restart development smoothly. While details about the new entry remain limited, Kondo said the team is making steady progress on the Kyoto-themed sequel behind the scenes.

The studio has been moving at a fast pace lately, recently revealing the 2nd chapter of the large-scale Trails in the Sky remake soon after releasing the 1st chapter, which became their most successful Steam launch so far. With Falcom’s quick development speed, fans may not have to wait long for more updates on the next Tokyo Xanadu game.
