Nihon Falcom announced that Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, a full 3D remake of the 2006 original, will launch worldwide in 2026. Fans and JRPG enthusiasts welcomed the news. However, many questioned the progress of the next mainline entry. Longtime supporters have been waiting for the Kai no Kiseki arc conclusion. As a result, the timing of the remakes sparked concern among some players.
President Toshihiro Kondo Addresses Shareholders’ Concerns
During the December 18 shareholders’ meeting, president Toshihiro Kondo explained why the remakes came first. Shareholders acknowledged that the remakes could attract new players. Yet, they worried longtime fans might grow frustrated while waiting for the mainline story.

Kondo apologized for the delay and said the PlayStation exclusivity of Kai no Kiseki games had caused the player base to shrink. Consequently, the team sought ways to reengage players before continuing the mainline arc.
Remakes Aim to Reengage Players

Kondo emphasized that the remakes help reengage former players and welcome newcomers. Older entries provide an easier entry point for those who struggled to join midway. In addition, he said the remakes give the development team a break, allowing them to recharge. This way, the team can stay motivated while working on Kai no Kiseki.
Team Limitations and Development Challenges

The president noted the high development costs and a small team of 69 employees, who also handle Ys games and other projects. Therefore, he described the remakes as a “breather” that lets the team recover without sacrificing quality. Moreover, proper pacing ensures they can deliver consistent experiences without overextending staff resources.
Release Plans for Remakes and New Entries
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter will launch in 2026 for PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. Meanwhile, Trails Beyond the Horizon arrives in the West in January 2026 across all major platforms.

Nihon Falcom continues balancing longtime fans’ expectations while attracting new players through strategic remakes and careful planning, thus keeping the series accessible and engaging. For more updates on the game, follow their official X account
