The development team behind Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection recently sat down with Japanese outlet 4Gamer to talk about the decisions that shaped the upcoming RPG, touching on story direction, battle system changes, and how long players can expect the game to last.
One of the most notable shifts is the age of the main character. Game director Kenji Oguro explained that the protagonist is set at around 19 years old, older than the heroes in both previous Stories games, who were 12 and 15 respectively. In those earlier titles, the young heroes spent much of their journey being guided and trained by more experienced riders. Oguro felt that repeating that setup a third time would risk feeling too familiar, so the team went in a different direction.
Instead, the protagonist in Twisted Reflection starts out as the kingdom’s top rider. According to Oguro, this change allowed both the story and gameplay to grow in scope and bring something fresh to the series.

Lead game designer Daisuke Wakahara said the team set out to make battles more demanding this time around. The goal was to build a system where players would need to think through different options, test out strategies, and feel genuine satisfaction when things came together. At the same time, the team kept playability and comfort in mind, taking cues from recent turn-based RPG titles like Metaphor ReFantazio and Expedition 33.
A new stamina system replaces the older Kinship Gauge setup, letting players use skills more regularly than before. Monsters also have a Wyvernsoul Gauge that, when depleted, causes them to fatigue — but managing it well can also trigger a powerful move called a Synchro Rush that can deal major damage. Oguro compared the flow of combat to pro wrestling, where smaller exchanges build up momentum before everything explodes into a dramatic finish.
The game introduces Feral Monsters, which are more dangerous versions of regular enemies. These monsters counter-attack when the Blightstones on their bodies are targeted. Wakahara said this is intentional, and designed to push players to think carefully about when and where to attack. Unlike previous Stories games, which leaned heavily into post-game content, Twisted Reflection is built so that players feel a sense of completion once the main story wraps up. Oguro put the main story at around 30 hours, though side quests and extra content will add more time on top of that.

Executive producer Ryozo Tsujimoto noted that finishing in exactly 30 hours would be a stretch for most players. Some internal testers spent over 50 hours with the game, putting the expected playtime somewhere in the 40 to 50 hour range for a typical run.
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is set to launch on March 13, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC.
