Nintendo marked the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario series in its latest Nintendo Direct by announcing a slew of new titles, remasters, and upgrades, all set to release over the next year. Fans were treated to a mix of nostalgia and fresh experiences, including a Super Mario Galaxy remaster, a new Mario Tennis game, and a brand-new Yoshi adventure. The announcements also hint at the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, tying together the series’ legacy and its continued expansion into new media.
Super Mario Galaxy Remaster
Top billing went to remasters of the classic Wii titles Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The games will launch on October 2, 2025, as a double-pack physical release, or individually as digital downloads via the Nintendo eShop. Previously only included in the limited-run Super Mario 3D All-Stars, these reissues now feature Galaxy-themed amiibo and a real-life edition of Rosalina’s storybook. The remasters arrive just ahead of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, offering fans a chance to revisit these iconic adventures before seeing them on the big screen.
Mario Tennis Fever
Nintendo also unveiled Mario Tennis Fever, the latest entry in the long-running tennis series. The game introduces Fever Rackets, which grant special skills and gameplay modifiers, and includes a dungeon-crawling Adventure mode where characters are transformed into babies. Mario Tennis Fever is slated for release on Switch 2 on February 12, 2026, promising a fun mix of strategy, story, and multiplayer action.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch 2 Edition
Super Mario Bros. Wonder will receive a Switch 2 Edition in spring 2026, officially titled Super Mario Bros. Wonder — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park. Bellabel Park acts as a hub for new co-operative and competitive multiplayer challenges, and the Switch 2 Edition includes additional content, such as a talking toy inspired by the game’s flower characters. This new edition aims to expand both the gameplay and social aspects of the original title.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
The Direct also showcased a brand-new Yoshi game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, a 2D platformer where players explore Yoshi’s island and encounter a variety of creatures. Set for a spring 2026 release as a Switch 2 exclusive, the game promises charming visuals, imaginative levels, and a storybook aesthetic reminiscent of past Yoshi titles.
Celebrating Mario’s Legacy
The timing of the Direct coincided perfectly with Super Mario’s 40th anniversary. The franchise began with Mario’s first appearance in 1981’s Donkey Kong and was solidified by the release of Super Mario Bros. on the NES in 1985, which transformed him into a global icon. Nintendo has long used anniversary milestones to celebrate the character’s legacy, as seen during the 35th anniversary in 2020, which included titles like Super Mario Bros. 35, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and limited-edition hardware. The 40th anniversary continues that tradition, combining nostalgia with exciting new experiences for both longtime fans and newcomers.
The latest Direct demonstrates that Mario remains as relevant as ever, with remasters, new adventures, and even a movie extending his reach beyond gaming and into popular culture.
