The ASEAN Digital Content Summit 2025 press conference highlighted Malaysia’s growing focus on digital content and the creative economy, with key officials sharing plans for regional development.
Mohammad Nazrul bin Abd Rahim, Director of Tourism Johor, explained that digital content is one of six main areas in the Maju Johor 2030 plan. “In Maju Johor 2030 we have 6 pillars, one of them is about the expanding of our digital content,” Abd Rahim said. The state government is working to promote digital content through Visit Johor and other local platforms. When asked about specific funding amounts for this initiative, Abd Rahim said he would provide the exact numbers later.
ASEAN Market Development
Anuar Fariz Fadzil, CEO of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), described Johor’s important role as Malaysia’s economic gateway due to its location near Singapore. “For us, Johor is the economic gateway for Malaysia because of the proximity to Singapore,” Fadzil explained.
He noted that while Johor has many manufacturing industries, the state is also being developed as a hub for the Orange Economy – which focuses on creative and cultural industries. Fadzil emphasized that Malaysia’s digital strategy goes beyond Kuala Lumpur and aims to serve the entire ASEAN region. “We cannot just be focused on KL in the sense where it’s about Malaysia, it’s about ASEAN,” he said.

The goal is to attract more Singapore companies to set up operations in Malaysia’s special economic zones. Many skilled workers already move between Singapore and Johor, creating opportunities for regional talent development.
Malaysia Wins SIGGRAPH Hosting Rights
In a major announcement, Fadzil revealed that Malaysia has successfully won the bid to host SIGGRAPH, a major international conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques. “Yes, we won the bid and this was a hard fought one,” he said.
He called this victory part of positioning Malaysia beyond traditional industries. “It’s not just about manufacturing, it’s not just about data centres. It’s not just about how we want to have hard industries,” Fadzil explained, referring to Malaysia’s focus on creative and technology sectors.

MDEC has opened an office in Johor to support this digital economy push. “At MDEC we believe in it so much, we set up an office here. So we want to drive the agenda even further,” Fadzil added.
Supporting Digital Talent
The officials discussed various government initiatives to build digital skills. These include working with the Ministry of Youth and Sports on esports programs, developing AI coding abilities, and supporting digital influencers.

MDEC also runs business digitalization programs to help small and medium businesses adopt digital tools. “It’s also about how we have the right skill sets, the right digital skill sets to be able to address the needs of the economy,” Fadzil said. The summit shows Malaysia’s commitment to building a strong digital content industry that can serve both local and regional markets across Southeast Asia.
