Netflix and Sony have reportedly finalized a deal for KPop Demon Hunters 2, with the animated sequel currently targeting a 2029 release window, according to Bloomberg. Animated productions often take years to complete, so the four-year gap between the first movie and its sequel isn’t surprising. However, the release date could still shift depending on development progress. Neither Netflix nor Sony has commented on the timeline.
A Phenomenon Beyond Streaming

The original KPop Demon Hunters followed a fictional K-pop girl group who protected the world from demons using their music. Developed and produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the film premiered directly on Netflix through a licensing partnership with Sony. To everyone’s surprise, it quickly became Netflix’s most popular movie of all time.
Its success went far beyond streaming. Three original tracks — “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop” — dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks. They’re now viewed as strong contenders for Grammy nominations in the coming year. The film’s mix of high-energy performances and emotional storytelling helped it connect with global audiences, blending K-pop flair with supernatural adventure.
From Streamer Hit to Box Office Draw

The movie’s success even pushed Netflix to take an unusual step — bringing KPop Demon Hunters to theaters. The streaming giant organized sing-along fan events in August and October, giving fans the chance to celebrate its songs and characters together.
During its first theatrical run, the movie earned around $18 million over two days. The Halloween re-release added another $5 to $6 million, an impressive result given that it had already been available on Netflix for months. The strong turnout showed the film’s passionate fanbase and surprising crossover appeal beyond streaming.
The Sequel’s Future

Co-director Maggie Kang, who worked alongside Chris Appelhans on the first movie, has often spoken about wanting to continue the story. In an earlier interview with Variety, she mentioned that the first film left plenty of room for expansion.
“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory,” Kang said. “There are still many questions left unanswered and areas that we didn’t explore. We had to limit ourselves since the film was only 85 minutes long.”
While details about KPop Demon Hunters 2 remain under wraps, the creative team’s enthusiasm — combined with the first film’s massive success — suggests that Netflix and Sony plan to turn it into a lasting franchise.
A Long Wait for Huntr/x’s Return

With a tentative 2029 release, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is still years away, but anticipation is already growing. The first movie’s blend of pop music, friendship, and supernatural spectacle captivated audiences worldwide. If the sequel can recapture that same energy, Huntr/x’s long-awaited comeback will be worth the wait.
