With Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent confirmed for a North American / European release, here’s a reroll tier list afforded by the foresight of the Japanese release to help you get a better start in the game. Since this is also based on the Japanese release, many of these units are not necessarily immediately available at launch, so do also check the character pool to ensure you don’t waste time trying for a unit which is unavailable. Characters are also obtainable in a range of star ranks, so aim for a 5-star at minimum.

Names may be subject to localization changes. The “Breaker” term used in this list means the ability to shred shields of enemies, putting them into “break” mode where they become more vulnerable.

S TIER

THERION	Breaker, DPS	Can double cast. Multi-hit attacks. Reliant on Boost for damage.
Z'AANTA	DPS, Breaker	Multi-hit, but random attacks. Can power up Hagen and his bow attacks. AOE capabilities limited to regular attacks.
PRIMROSE	DPS, Breaker, Buffer, Debuffer	Multi-hit attacks, both physical and Dark. Has buffs and debuffs that can be extended. Doesn't have ATK buff as support ability.
H'AANIT	DPS, Breaker	Multi-hit, but random attacks. Can hit multiple weaknesses. Powerful bow ability takes a long time to unlock. Difficult to set up.
FIORE	DPS, Breaker	Easy DPS. Can be raised to have DEF debuffs and multi-hit attacks. Low SP pool.
CECILY	Breaker, DPS	Versatile skill set to hit multiple weaknesses. Can learn support ability to buff Physical attacks. Easy Boost. High SP consumption. Requires continuous investment.
TRESSA	Breaker, Support	Multi-hit attacks, can eventually be start of combat. Dodge tank. High SP consumption.
OPHELIA	Healer, Buffer	Has both regeneration and burst heals. Multi-hit attacks can give her some Break utility. High SP consumption. Revive requires max limit break.
CHLOE	Breaker, Healer, Support	Multi-hit attacks. The only one of her class that can heal. Many buffs and debuffs. Requires max limit break for multi-hit element attack / high damage skills.
MILLARD	Healer, Buffer	Support ability enhances healing skills. Useful ally buffs can be learnt.
NINA LANA	DPS, Breaker, Debuffer	Versatile multi-hit attacks. Can be great Dark DPS. Debuff can be difficult to use. One of the lowest base ATK.

Still good, but if you’re willing, you can keep trying.

THERESE	DPS, Breaker	Versatile multi-hit attacks. Brings Lightning Resist debuff. Individual skills not that powerful.
STEAD	Healer, Breaker, DPS	High Dark elemental damage. Can inflict Bleed debuff at higher levels. Provides easy heals, though lower than Millard's.
OLBERIC	Breaker, DPS	Multi-hit attacks. High damage single strikes. Boost reliant to Break. Requires max limit break for spear attack.
JILLMEILA	DPS, Breaker	Multi-hit attacks. High damage against Broken enemies. Somewhat reliant on debuffs. Low attack rate.
NICOLA	Breaker, SP Recovery, Debuffer	Multi-hit attacks. Can supply SP to other allies. Useful debuffs. High SP consumption. Low SP pool. Can only hit Dagger weakness.
LYNETTE	Buffer, Breaker, Debuff	Powerful support for frontline allies. Needs investment. Shines better when you already have other strong DPS.
KOUREN	DPS, Breaker	Multi-hit attacks. Can recover Boost Points. Vulnerable to debuffs.
LYUMMIS	DPS, Breaker, Healer	Multi-hit attacks. Can heal, and regenerate HP even as support character. Requires max limit break for multi-hit and heal.
SCARECROW	DPS, Breaker	Can easily Break enemies, and has self-buffs to increase damage against them. Needs investment.
MOOLOO	DPS, Breaker	Powerful Fire attack. Can debuff Fire resistance, and buff Fire attack. No multi-hits.
SOLEIL	DPS, Breaker, Healer	Multi-hit attacks. Can extend buffs. No high power attack. No damage buffing support ability.
FALCO	Breaker, DPS, Buffer, Debuffer	Can remove shields for single or multiple targets. Useful buffs and debuffs. Buff/debuff extension inferior to Viola's.
HAZE	DPS, Breaker	Combines good Breaking capabilities with support abilities that applies DEF debuff on enemies and ATK buff on self. Less convenient firepower.
ULDAI	Breaker, DPS	Multi-hit attacks. Dark elemental array of attacks. Support ability buffs Spears. Requires max limit break for multi-hit. Low SP pool.
ELIZA	DPS, Breaker	Multi-hit attacks. Doesn't have many Sword attack options.
THEO	DPS, Breaker, Healer	Has regeneration and can provide debuff immunity. Doesn't have high stats.
CALDONA	DPS, Breaker, Support	Pre-emptive tank and heal. Can extend debuffs. High SP consumption. Low SP pool. Requires max limit break for multi-hit attacks.
GILDEROY	DPS, Tank	Can taunt. Has counterattacks and HP recovery. Can Paralyze bosses. Low SP pool.
HASUMI	Breaker, Buffer, Healer	Can buff DEF, HP/SP regeneration to frontline. Multi-hit attacks. Support ability not very useful.
JOSHUA	Breaker, DPS	Multi-hit attacks. Good AOE capabilities. Speedy. Requires max limit break for multi-hit / high-power attacks.

B TIER

Recommended to start over.

KERSJES	DPS, Breaker, Debuffer	Multi-hit elemental attacks. Attacks have additional modifiers. No Bow attacks. ATK stat not that high.
HARLEY	Breaker, Buffer, Debuffer	Multi-hit attacks. AOE capabilities. No particular SP consumption issues. Requires max limit break for all-ally DEF buff. Not exceptionally powerful.
LIONEL	DPS, Breaker	Double strike and Physical DEF increase ability. Can utilize Ice attacks. While multi-hit, can't do more than 2 strikes. No damage increase support ability.

C TIER

Anyone else that’s left over, essentially.

Of course, if any of the characters considered to be “low tier” happen to be your favourite, as with any gacha game, you should reroll following your heart and not use this Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent list as a hard and fast rule. You can try to reroll for at least 2 5-stars to start, as while you can raise the lower star rank characters, it would be difficult to obtain the required materials to do so.
