Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Face a Major Ban in Russia

Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most anticipated video game releases of the decade, may face significant accessibility issues in Russia following renewed calls for a nationwide ban. An international public organization with a focus on Russian cultural and social policy has raised concerns over the game’s content, arguing that it poses a moral risk to younger audiences. If such a ban were enacted, it could prevent more than 140 million potential players in Russia from legally accessing Rockstar Games’ upcoming title.

A Long-Awaited Release Under Scrutiny

GTA 6 currently stands as one of the most anticipated games scheduled for 2026. The franchise has maintained global popularity since its transition to fully realized 3D open worlds with Grand Theft Auto 3. Anticipation has grown even stronger due to the lengthy gap between mainline entries. Grand Theft Auto 5 launched in September 2013, and with GTA 6 now targeting a release date of November 19, 2026, fans will have waited over 13 years for a new installment. This prolonged development cycle has only amplified attention and, with it, controversy.

Russian Officials Voice Moral Concerns

Mikhail Ivanov, deputy chair of the World Russian People’s Council, has publicly called for a ban on GTA 6 nearly a year before its release. According to reports from Russian outlet News.ru, Ivanov described the unreleased game as a “dangerous tool of influence,” arguing that it could corrupt youth through its themes and content. He accused Rockstar Games of intentionally including vulgar and destructive material that he claims undermines societal values.

The Grand Theft Auto series has long depicted criminal activities such as robbery, violence, and other illegal acts as part of its open-world design. These elements have historically sparked criticism from political and cultural groups worldwide. Several countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates, have previously enforced full-series bans due to similar concerns.

Specific Content Raises Additional Alarm

Ivanov’s comments also targeted specific elements rumored or expected to appear in GTA 6, including depictions of male striptease. He labeled such content a violation of traditional moral and spiritual values. While sexual content and strip clubs have appeared in earlier GTA titles, his remarks have drawn attention due to their focus on male performers. This stance has raised concerns within LGBTQIA+ gaming communities, particularly given Russia’s existing restrictions on LGBTQIA+ advocacy and related expression.

Who Has the Power to Enforce a Ban?

Despite the strong language used by Ivanov, the World Russian People’s Council does not have the legal authority to impose bans. That responsibility rests with Roskomnadzor, the federal agency that manages Russia’s list of restricted materials. Historically, Roskomnadzor has focused on books, films, websites, and social media platforms rather than video games. However, recent actions, such as the banning of Roblox in late 2025 over child safety concerns, suggest that games are no longer entirely overlooked.

Ivanov has urged Rockstar Games to consider releasing a censored version of GTA 6 for the Russian market to avoid a potential ban. Whether Rockstar will respond to these demands remains unclear.

As GTA 6 moves closer to its projected release, debates around censorship, creative freedom, and market access continue to intensify.
