Square Enix has shared new details about Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a remake of the classic RPG first released in 2000 as Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The game launches worldwide on February 5, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.
It keeps the grand story of childhood friends who uncover the truth of their world but adds a handcrafted art style, new features, and extra content. Players can also look forward to three downloadable content packs and a Collector’s Edition packed with items.
Handcrafted Visuals With a Diorama Touch

The remake trades its older polygonal look for a handcrafted diorama style. Environments, dungeons, and towns resemble miniature figurines, giving the world more charm and detail. Akira Toriyama’s iconic character designs now appear in stylized 3D, bringing depth and personality to every hero and villain. Even key cutscenes use this new art direction, reimagining memorable moments while staying true to the series’ charm.
Story and Exploration Across Time

The adventure begins on Estard Island, where the protagonist and his friends uncover ancient stone fragments. When placed on a pedestal, the fragments transport them to new worlds filled with mystery and danger. Each tablet they complete unlocks another location and advances the story. What starts as curiosity soon turns into a fight against dark forces that threaten reality itself.
The remake also streamlines menus with a new tab-based system, making exploration and navigation easier. Players can also enjoy activities beyond the main story, such as the battle arena and the Lucky Panel minigame, both rewarding rare items and gear.
A Cast of Familiar and New Faces

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined brings back the core trio: the Hero, Kiefer, and Maribel. The Hero serves as the customizable lead, while Kiefer’s fiery nature and Maribel’s sharp wit create a lively balance that defines much of the adventure.

They’re joined by Ruff, a boy raised by wolves whose innocence adds charm, and Sir Mervyn, an experienced knight who offers wisdom and stability. Each character adds personality and depth to both the story and combat.
With enhanced visuals and new dialogue, the remake highlights their bonds more clearly, making the cast feel richer and more memorable for both newcomers and longtime fans.
Battle System Evolves With New Depth

Combat remains turn-based but feels more fluid thanks to modern updates. Players can strike weaker monsters directly in the field to save time, while auto-battle and adjustable speed keep the action moving. Vocations return with more freedom than before. Characters can switch jobs, combine two through the Moonlighting feature, and unlock powerful skills.

Each vocation also grants a unique perk that activates when a character becomes “worked up,” often changing the outcome of a fight. These abilities reward strategy and keep battles tense and exciting.
Downloadable Content and Special Editions

Three downloadable content packs will release alongside the base game. The Road of Regal Wretches pits players against classic bosses from the Erdrick Trilogy. Luminary’s Livery offers costumes inspired by Dragon Quest XI. The Jam-Packed Swag Bag provides Slime-themed equipment and items to help players early in their journey.

For fans who want more, the Digital Deluxe Edition includes early access and all DLC, while the Collector’s Edition adds physical items like a Ship in a Bottle figure, a plush, and a SteelBook case.
Bonuses and Future Showcases

Pre-orders include a costume based on the Hero of Dragon Quest VIII and Seeds of Proficiency. Each platform also offers exclusive Slime-themed shields, and players with save data from Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake can claim a special bonus item. Square Enix will also highlight the game at Tokyo Game Show 2025 with a panel, gameplay presentation, and an exhibition of handmade dolls that inspired the in-game models.
With its refreshed visuals, updated systems, and faithful retelling of a beloved story, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined promises to capture both longtime fans and new adventurers when it arrives on February 5, 2026.
