Square Enix has set a release date for Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, the newest entry in the long-running Dragon Quest series. The game is a roguelite RPG heading to mobile devices, and it goes live on April 21 UTC (April 20 PDT) for both iOS and Android.
To go along with the release date announcement, Square Enix also dropped the game’s opening trailer, which was produced by animation studio Kamikaze Douga. Players who want to get in on day one can pre-order the game on the App Store for iOS, or pre-register on Google Play for Android.
The game is a roguelite RPG, meaning runs through the game are structured around repeatable dungeon-like stages with varying outcomes. Players make their way through areas called rifts alongside a mechanical companion named Roly. The game has a main story focused on restoring order to the world.
One of the central mechanics is the Blessings system. Blessings are mix-and-match buffs that change up every stage, adding variety to each run and keeping players on their toes. Strategy and a bit of luck both play a role in how runs play out. On the character side, players can build a party using classic Dragon Quest vocations. Leveling up is part of the picture, but there is also a vocation tree system that lets players unlock and upgrade abilities for each role.

Beyond the main content, the game has additional modes including the Gauntlette, where players face waves of monsters, and Shrines, which feature boss fights.
