In an all-too-brief celebratory moment, Red Candle Games‘ Devotion was briefly available on GOG, then removed. The official Twitter account states the following:
Earlier today, it was announced that the game Devotion is coming to GOG. After receiving many messages from gamers, we have decided not to list the game in our store.
The original announcement by Red Candle Games is still up at this time of writing, which reads as follows:
Hello friends, we want to share with you– Red Candle will publish #還願Devotion on Dec 18 on GOG. gog.com/game/devotion
The content and the price of the re-release remains the same, for $16.99 / €13.99
Thank you for your trust and support. We wish you a happy end of the year
Long story short, a reference to China’s President was found in Devotion, an unflattering comparison of him being made to Winnie the Pooh. The game was pulled off Steam, and hasn’t been available anywhere else since. The game has been preserved in the Harvard-Yenching Library along with Detention, at the very least, as well as having had a physical release in Taiwan.
Detention has been adapted into a Netflix series, and the developer has said they are working on a new game. We’ll have to stay tuned for that.
Will the game ever be made available to the wider public? Until the iron grip gets loosened, it’s unfortunate that GOG pulled Devotion and rendering it inaccessible to those who have yet to experience the game.
