The gaming world erupted after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lost its Game of the Year (GOTY) nomination at the Indie Game Awards due to generative AI use during development. Recently, Sandfall Interactive spoke directly to Twitch streamers and content creators to clarify its stance and address misconceptions.

Developers Affirm Human-Only Production
Game director Guillaume Broche explained, “Everything in the game is human-made. When AI appeared in 2022, we experimented briefly, but we didn’t like it. It felt wrong.”

He added that the team briefly applied AI to cover missed textures, but they removed the assets immediately. “The concept art, voice acting, everything is human made,” Broche emphasized. He firmly stated, “Everything will be made by humans, by us.”
Indie Game Awards Stand Firm
The Indie Game Awards confirmed their decision to retract Clair Obscur’s GOTY nomination. Their FAQ clarifies that even minimal AI use disqualifies a title.

Earlier in 2025, Sandfall developers openly discussed experimenting with AI-generated placeholder art. Players noticed a few textures after the release, and Sandfall patched the assets quickly, proving the AI use remained limited and experimental.
AI in the Gaming Industry

The controversy highlights broader debates about AI in game development. For instance, Larian Studios uses AI for slide presentations and concept drafts, while other studios experiment cautiously. Essentially, the main concern remains whether AI drives creative direction or only assists human developers.
Transparency and Trust
The Indie Game Awards cited dishonesty as the reason for rescinding Clair Obscur’s awards. Sandfall initially claimed that no AI was used, which conflicted with the studio’s admission of brief experimentation.

Nevertheless, Broche and his team remain committed to human-only content. Their dedication reflects a strong desire to preserve traditional craftsmanship. Meanwhile, Sandfall plans to combine careful experimentation with a firm human-first approach to maintain artistic integrity and transparency with the community.
