Capcom has pulled back the curtain on their highly anticipated title Onimusha: Way of the Sword, with producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei sharing extensive details about the upcoming action game in a new five-minute video message.
Set in Edo-period Kyoto, this latest entry in the renowned sword-fighting series will leverage Capcom’s cutting-edge technology to deliver what the team describes as “ultimate sword fighting action.” The game follows a new protagonist who, through an unexpected turn of events, gains possession of an Oni gauntlet, leading to intense battles against supernatural creatures known as Genma.

“You’ll explore historic locations around Kyoto, such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple, in a heroic tale of a soul samurai fighting against hordes of twisted creatures known as Genma,” Nihei revealed. “The protagonist, due to a twist of fate, finds himself wielding an Oni gauntlet.”
Producer Kadowaki outlined three core pillars for the project: compelling character development, featuring both a new protagonist and complex adversaries; a richly detailed Kyoto setting filled with historic locations; and refined combat mechanics that define the game’s action.
“In this game we are taking Onimusha’s signature sword fighting action and dark fantasy elements, and using Capcom’s latest technology to make this new game as captivating as possible,” Kadowaki explained.
Director Nihei elaborated on the combat system of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, emphasizing that while the game won’t be excessively difficult, it will feature strategic soul-absorption mechanics using the Oni gauntlet. “By absorbing souls, you can restore your health as well as use special moves. Deciding how to absorb the souls of your enemy in the heat of an intense battle will be the key to victory,” he explained.
